Fawad Khan Boards Two Projects, Guneet Monga Kapoor Joins Jahnu Barua Film at Tasveer Market (EXCLUSIVE)

As someone who has spent years immersed in the vibrant and dynamic world of South Asian cinema, I am absolutely thrilled by the developments that have emerged from the inaugural Tasveer Film Market. The collaboration between Pakistan superstar Fawad Khan and esteemed filmmakers like Mehreen Jabbar, Sarmad Khoosat, and Mo Naqvi on “Behind the Scenes” is a testament to the rich storytelling talent that our region boasts.

Star of Pakistan, Fawad Khan, has agreed to work on two new projects, while Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor has teamed up with veteran director Jahnu Barua for his latest movie. This collaboration took place during the initial phase of Tasveer Film Market, which focuses on South Asia and recently came to a close in Seattle.

Khan will be the main star in “Behind the Scenes,” a gripping newsroom drama created by Modoxy Media and Film Lab++. This witty yet ominous production gathers talented directors such as Mehreen Jabbar (“Jackson Heights”), Sarmad Khoosat (“Joyland”), and Mo Naqvi (“Insha’Allah Democracy”).

The actor is slated to take on a significant part in “The Prisoner,” a gripping crime series for Awedacious Originals. This series, set in the 1990s and based on Omar Shahid’s bestselling novel, is a Pakistani drama created by Parisa Siddiqi and Ahmer Khan. In this production, Khan will portray one of two brave cops who undertake an undercover operation to dismantle Karachi’s influential mafia-like political party. Awedacious, headed by Apoorva Bakshi and Monisha Thyagarajan, has also acquired “Disruption,” a documentary by Sarvnik Kaur (winner of Sundance’s “Against the Tide”). This film follows a struggle between an Indian farmer and a British corporation.

I’m thrilled to announce that Monga Kapoor has come aboard as a project mentor for Barua’s exciting co-production between India and Australia, “Whistle in the Wind.” This film represents another remarkable international collaboration for the producer who brought us the Oscar-winning masterpiece, “The Elephant Whisperers.” I can hardly wait to see what magic these brilliant minds will weave together!

At the market, Lotus Visual Productions presented two new films: “NISA” written and directed by Ambarien Alqadar, which delves into the personal odyssey of a 28-year-old Muslim woman navigating life’s hurdles; and “Lone Star Hijra,” helmed by Sheila Sawhny, narrating the tale of an Indian-American transgender woman’s pursuit of sisterhood.

In partnership with executive producer Zaki Chinde, Rita Meher’s Luminary Pictures announced agreements to develop three new projects: “The Pharaoh of Pharma,” authored by Vinny Anand and Ronald Austin; “The Chili Score” penned by the same duo; and “Good Girls,” written by Hira Sheraz.

The initial part of the event featured a lunch with investors, which was graced by industry professionals such as Shobha Sant from Creativeland Studios, Ameet Shukla from One Community, Amy Lillard from Washington Filmworks, Meg Kiernan from Amazon MGM Studios, Samir Sarkar from Magic Hour Films, and Tenten Wei from EST N8.

Meher, our market’s executive director, stated that the partnerships developed here showcase the exceptional skill and foresight within our community. This market has united various creators and provided a space where filmmakers, producers, and industry heavyweights can share ideas, cultivate connections, and pave the way for South Asian stories to shine on a global scale. It’s truly motivating to witness these projects take shape, and I am honored that our first Tasveer Film Market could act as a launchpad for such remarkable talent and fruitful collaborations.

Anupama Bose, the associate director, commented: “Industry experts’ excitement and feedback have been truly outstanding. We eagerly anticipate following the progress of the initial group of Tasveer Film Market projects.
