Fatih Akin’s ‘Amrum’ Debuts Teaser Ahead of World Premiere in Cannes (EXCLUSIVE)

The trailer for Fatih Akin’s “Amrum” was unveiled before its global debut in the Cannes Premiere section of the Cannes Film Festival. Beta Cinema is responsible for international distribution, while Warner Bros. will distribute the film in Germany and Dulac Distribution in France.

The movie unfolds on Amrum Island, situated off the German coastline, during spring of 1945. As the war nears its end, a resilient 12-year-old named Nanning navigates the perilous waters to catch seals, fishes under the cover of night, and labors on a neighboring farm to sustain his family. Despite the harshness, living on this picturesque, windblown island seems almost idyllic. However, when peace is declared, it exposes a hidden danger: the adversary is closer than he ever thought.

As a cinephile, I’d like to share that this movie is an adaptation of the childhood experiences of the multitalented German artist, Hark Bohm, who penned the initial script. Later, it was refined and brought to life by the skilled hands of director Akin.

In a conversation about the movie’s inspiration, Akin mentioned the films that influenced the production. He stated, “When Hark initially shared the story, I thought of ‘Bicycle Thieves’ and ‘Shoeshine,’ both by Vittorio De Sica. The sequences where Nanning searches for driftwood at night reminded me of ‘The Night of the Hunter’ directed by Charles Laughton. The overall feel of the movie aimed to capture the essence of ‘Stand by Me,’ directed by Rob Reiner, making my cinematic background the initial personal link to the film.

Jasper Billerbeck is joined by a talented cast that includes Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, Lars Jessen, Detlev Buck, Jan Georg Schütte, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Diane Kruger in this production.

This film is jointly produced by Bombero International and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, along with Rialto Film (co-production). Akin and Herman Weigel are the producers. The cinematography is handled by Karl Walter Lindenlaub, while Andrew Bird takes care of the editing.

Fatih Akin made a significant breakthrough in 2004 with the release of “Head-On,” which earned him the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. “The Edge of Heaven” (2007) received the best screenplay award at Cannes, while “Soul Kitchen” (2009) was honored with the special jury prize at Venice. “The Cut” (2014) was premiered in competition at Venice Film Festival. “In the Fade” (2017) garnered Kruger a best actress award in Cannes and won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. “The Golden Glove” (2019) had its debut at the Berlin Film Festival. His upcoming film, “Rheingold” (2022), attracted more than a million viewers in Germany.
