Julian Lefay, often referred to as the founder of The Elder Scrolls due to his significant roles in Arena and Daggerfall, sadly passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 59. After a brave struggle with cancer, he left us. The studio he co-founded, OnceLost Games, expresses that his passing is an immense sorrow not only for our team but also for our community and the gaming industry as a whole.
As a gamer, I can proudly say that I was part of the team at Bethesda since its early days, contributing so much to the company that one of the Elder Scrolls deities, Julianos, was actually named after me. Later on, I joined forces with two other former Bethesda developers, Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman, and together we established OnceLost Games. In 2021, we unveiled our exciting new project – a fantasy RPG titled The Wayward Realms.
Last week, it was announced that Lefay had taken a leave from work. According to CEO Peterson’s statement, he spent his last moments surrounded by his dear ones. The recent announcement about his passing from OnceLost refers to Lefay as one of the key architects for their upcoming RPG. Despite being ill, he continued to inspire our team with his vision, guide our developers, and make sure that each aspect of the game embodied his dedication to creating something truly exceptional.
The text goes on to express that although this departure represents a tremendous grief for our team, our community, and our field, we will persist in our endeavors on the game. In tribute to his memory, we are committed to realizing his aspirations by making his vision a tangible reality.
The closing statement reads, “Julian’s impact transcends our workplace. He touched the hearts of millions of gamers globally and motivated numerous creators to explore creative frontiers. Julian’s spirit will endure in every domain, every adventure, and every magical moment that players encounter within The Wayward Realms.
