Farmiga Sisters’ Characters from ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘The Nun’ Will Never Meet Due to Legal Drama

In the final installment of “The Conjuring” series, titled “The Conjuring: Last Rites“, horror enthusiasts may still have unanswered questions about the storyline that will wrap up the Warren family’s demon-hunting saga. Unfortunately, for those hoping to see Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren and Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene on screen together in this film, you might be disappointed. Regrettably, these characters won’t meet during “Last Rites“, and there’s a solid explanation for this decision.

Michael Chaves discussed with Entertainment Weekly that in the forthcoming film, the real-life sisters’ character arcs will not align as previously speculated. This decision stems from some complex legal matters concerning the authentic events that underpin the narratives of The Conjuring series.

In truth, I found myself yearning for a deeper bond, if I may say so, between the character, The Nun, and the Warren family. However, it becomes somewhat complex due to its basis in real events, as we delve into some tricky legal ground.

In simpler terms, Chaves is discussing how Lorraine’s numerous tales, which are believed to be genuine, formed a foundation for the demonologists’ careers. The exorcisms were significant, but they led to books and eventually one of the top-grossing horror movie series ever made. The director felt that making the characters of the sisters interact would have undermined Lorraine’s authenticity.

People seemed to prefer maintaining an air of authenticity around the main Conjuring tales, even though they were largely fictionalized relationships.

As a film critic, I’d put it like this: “While the intricate family ties in this epic Game of Thrones-like series are captivating, overemphasizing them can somewhat tarnish their appeal. It tends to undermine the authenticity of the primary narrative, which is what initially drew us in.

The Big “However”: The Saint Lucy Bloodline

In the two “Nun” films, Sister Irene is the main character, and both movies introduce a villain who could have served as a potential adversary for Lorraine Warren. However, other than Valak’s involvement, there doesn’t seem to be anything that links them together. The second “Nun” movie, titled “The Nun II”, contained a post-credits scene with Lorraine and Ed Warren, but it was more of a nod to the central narrative of the demonologists. If this scene had been omitted during editing, it wouldn’t have affected the story in any significant way.

In a fascinating twist for fans of “The Nun II,” it appears there’s an intriguing implication that characters from the series stem from a lineage of saints. This concept, subtly hinted at in “The Nun,” could potentially be further explored. Interestingly, Sister Irene discovers her familial connection to Saint Lucy and experiences a vision where she encounters none other than Lorraine Warren herself among the descendants.

Peter Safran, the executive producer of The Conjuring films, indicated that there had been plans to reunite the sisters within the movies, but he stated that “it didn’t quite fit logically.” Safran elaborated: “We have always been careful about not forcing elements into the story merely for the sake of it. There must be a justification and purpose behind every decision we make in our storytelling.
