As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time” is now globally accessible, offering both local and online multiplayer experiences! Although the marketing has been emphasizing the multiplayer aspect quite a bit, it’s not an immediate unlock. This guide will walk you through the process of enabling online multiplayer in Fantasy Life i, explain the various modes, delve into how quest progression unfolds in this online world, and much more!
How to unlock multiplayer in Fantasy Life i
In Fantasy Life, the option for online multiplayer becomes accessible during Chapter 3 of the main storyline. How swiftly you reach Chapter 3 will depend on whether you’re focusing on leveling up various lives from the beginning or solely following the primary quests. My friend managed to get there in approximately five hours, while I took about ten hours. This demonstrates the flexible nature of progression in this game. The Family Co-op (couch co-op) is unlocked within an hour of starting play.
How to play with friends online in Fantasy Life i
In or after Chapter 3 of the game, when you reach your Guild at Base Camp, look for Colm, an NPC located at the back. Speaking with him will allow you to start multiplayer sessions. Be aware that initiating multiplayer may save your progress and halt main story quests, so proceed with caution. This rule applies to both online play and local wireless multiplayer on Nintendo Switch and its subsequent model. The following images demonstrate where to go to unlock this feature after gaining access to the Guild at Base Camp in Chapter 3.
From this point, choose “Recruit Members” if you’re initiating a session, or “Leave for Another’s Session” if you’re joining someone else’s. Each option comes equipped with search tools to help you locate friends or be found by them. Cross-platform play is enabled in multiplayer mode, and I’ve verified its functionality across Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and PS5 with no interruptions or disconnections so far.
Fantasy Life i local and online multiplayer differences
In Fantasy Life, instead of referring to it as Local Multiplayer, they use the term “Family Co-op” (also known as couch co-op). This feature resembles Super Mario Odyssey’s gameplay, where the second player doesn’t control a fully playable character, but rather, a helper like Trip. It is essential to note that Family Co-op and online or local wireless multiplayer cannot be used concurrently. Additionally, it offers Steam Remote Play Together functionality.
Instead of using wires, or playing online, you can opt for multiplayer action involving 1-4 players, where you can delve into adventures together, collect items, confront bosses, enter dungeons, and so on. It’s worth noting that only the Nintendo Switch and its successor (Switch 2) offer local wireless play.

Fantasy Life i online multiplayer quest progression – what works and what doesn’t
For the past week, there’s been a good deal of confusion about the game due to rapid updates by Level-5 on various platforms and the early unlocking of the Digital Deluxe Edition. As of May 23, 2025, it’s worth noting that the PlayStation and Steam versions function differently compared to the Xbox Series X|S and Switch versions. From version 1.1.4 onwards, players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam can view Quest screens during multiplayer games, receive notifications for quest completion in multiplayer, and properly advance non-main story quests while playing together.
In Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, this function doesn’t operate similarly, without notifications for completed quests or an option to view the Quest screen during multiplayer. However, from version 1.2.1 (expected to launch on or around May 29), these platforms will include such features.
No matter which gaming platform you’re using, playing the main story in cooperation with others online is not an option. Additionally, you cannot finish any main story missions while connected online, as these are put on hold once you start a multiplayer session, whether it’s online or local wireless multiplayer.

Fantasy Life i multiplayer game modes
In Fantasy Life multiplayer, you can establish four different types of spaces: Island, Exploration, Grove, and Any. The Island setting enables you to gather with your friends in the Past Map, allowing you to traverse regions that have been unlocked via the main story such as Eternia Village or Faraway Island, among others. Exploration offers a more open-ended experience where you and your companions can explore the vast world of Ginormosia, participate in world events, complete timed events, battle bosses, and engage in various other activities.

How to unlock the Grove multiplayer game mode in Fantasy Life i
In Fantasy Life, there’s a fourth mode called “Grove Mode” for setting up multiplayer sessions. This mode features “Treasure Groves,” which are dungeons that are randomly generated and offer unique rewards. For detailed information about these Treasure Groves, you can check out my dedicated guide here. Remember, you won’t be able to access this mode until you complete Chapter 4, so keep that in mind before clicking on the guide link.
Fantasy Life i multiplayer time limits
In Fantasy Life, your multiplayer experiences are capped at a duration of 60 minutes, after which the session must be restarted. For Island mode, you’re given only 30 minutes, while Explore and Grove modes both allow for 60 minutes.
If you’re considering purchasing Fantasy Life 1, I strongly recommend browsing through our comprehensive guides available here, as well as reading my review of the game on Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and ROG Ally which can be found here.
The game “Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time” is now accessible on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam). In the future, it will also be available for Nintendo Switch 2 under the title “Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
