Director Matt Shakman of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has shared insights into one reason why the upcoming movie is set in a different reality.
Why did Matt Shakman say The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in a different universe?
At a recent IMAX premiere in the U.K., Shakman shared why the movie’s setting is on an alternate Earth rather than the familiar one from the MCU. This decision was made to avoid confusion as fans might question the plot if it took place in the same universe they are accustomed to.
Shakman stated that it was not desirable for them to exist in our world or the one filled with Marvel characters since they would have been instrumental in preventing Thanos’ arrival, as they could have resolved the issue at hand if they had been present.
Shakman additionally disclosed that the storyline of First Steps unfolds within the realm of Earth-828, a distinct sector of the Marvel multiverse. For more details, delve into the complete interview below.
The principal characters of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” are headed by Pedro Pascal portraying Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn stepping into the shoes of Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach playing Ben Grimm. The movie also features Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner in a dual role as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer. Furthermore, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne have been recruited for unspecified roles.
Amidst a colorful, futuristic setting reminiscent of the 1960s, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps presents the debut of Marvel’s original family: Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing). This new adventure finds them grappling with their toughest challenge to date.
In this project, Kevin Feige takes on the role of the main producer, with Louis D’Esposito, Grant Curtis, and Tim Lewis serving as executive producers. Mitch Bell shares in the production duties, and the musical scores are composed by Michael Giacchino.
In US theaters on July 25, 2025, you’ll find “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hitting the screens. It’s been officially confirmed that Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach will all reappear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” due for release in December 2026.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to release in theaters on July 25, 2025.
