As an avid gamer with a penchant for retro RPGs, I can confidently say that my gaming journey has been nothing short of enchanting. From the pixelated glory days to the modern age of immersive storytelling and stunning graphics, I’ve seen it all. And let me tell you, Fantasian on Steam Deck is a game changer!
As a devoted fan here at RPG Site, I can’t hide my excitement about Fantasian; even if you’re new to our community, Josh made it clear in his recent review of Fantasian: Neo Dimension that we’ve been eagerly anticipating this game. We’ve been enamored with Fantasian around here, bestowing our highest praises on the game last year, and honestly, we’re thrilled that more gamers will soon get to enjoy it. It’s like a breath of fresh air when we hear it’s leaving its Apple Arcade confinement, and the improvements and updates in these new ports are just the icing on the cake!
Instead of revisiting Fantasian at Tokyo Game Show so soon after PAX West, I hesitated due to the close timing. However, when Square Enix offered another play session for the new demo build at TGS, my curiosity got the better of me. Although I wasn’t initially sure what unique aspects I could highlight or focus on, I accepted their invitation to experience the game’s latest release firsthand.
Surprisingly, Square Enix subtly hinted at something different during the press demo of Fantasian on PlayStation 5. While en route to the designated station, I spotted several stations running Fantasian on Steam Deck OLED. Intrigued, I inquired about switching my appointment and fortunately, Square Enix graciously allowed it. This unexpected change not only offered a fresh perspective for my work, avoiding repetition of points made by Josh, but playing Fantasian on Steam Deck was an exceptional experience that I couldn’t have imagined otherwise.
Instead of delving into specific aspects of Fantasian as a game, Josh has already covered that extensively earlier this month, and you can always refer back to my initial review for a broader perspective on its mechanics. As soon as I learned that the game is playable on Steam Deck, I became eager to gain a clearer understanding of what awaits me when I eventually get a chance to play the complete game later in 2023.
It’s fantastic that one of the valuable features on the Steam Deck is the performance metrics built into SteamOS. I swiftly activated these to check how Fantasian was performing on the Steam Deck OLED. Before even turning on the overlay, it was obvious that the game was running at a very smooth frame rate, and in fact, maintaining 90FPS on this system is not only achievable but with plenty of extra power to spare. Both battery life and framerates should be excellent, regardless if you have an LCD or OLED model. Since Apple Arcade requires support for various aspect ratios, Fantasian also fully supports the 16:10, 800p resolution of the Steam Deck’s screen, providing a smooth and responsive experience without any black bars that could potentially cause burn-in on the OLED model. In short, you won’t find a better experience regarding official Steam Deck support.
It seemed logical to me that Fantasian would work well with the Steam Deck, considering its user interface was designed for smaller screens. Enlarging it on a larger screen can feel awkward, similar to my experience playing the original on an Apple TV 4K. Interestingly, I didn’t anticipate such a smooth frame rate without much strain; in retrospect, perhaps this performance should have been expected given that only character models are being rendered. The only surprise was how smoothly it ran, which wasn’t as obvious beforehand.
In recent months, Square Enix has made it clear to RPG Site that they view Steam Deck as a significant platform for their releases. The marketing push for the Steam versions of Kingdom Hearts PC ports emphasizing Steam Deck compatibility, the official save uploads on SteamOS for Dragon Quest Builders PC, and now showcasing their games on Steam Deck at events suggest this isn’t just empty talk – it shows a deeper dedication to the platform. Although Steam Deck is not yet mainstream, it’s positive to see a company focusing on optimization for lower-powered devices. I believe this approach is more beneficial for the industry as a whole, and the more companies that adopt it, the quicker I think improvements will be made.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – the more people that can play Fantasian, the better. I can only talk about Fantasian so much with the other contributors to RPG Site who also played it on Apple Arcade, and I can’t wait for the chance to discuss the experience with folks readying themselves to play it for the first time with these ports, just as I’m ready to re-experience the game on Steam Deck.
