The season finalé stirs up a buzz on social media, with fans expressing a variety of passionate opinions about the show thus far.
Among fans of “The Last of Us,” diverse opinions are emerging following the airing of the second season’s finale. While some applaud the series for its Season 2 ending direction, others have expressed strong criticism, labeling it as anything from unimpressive (“underwhelming”) to what they consider to be “the most disappointing season finale.
Drawing inspiration from the 2013 video game title and its 2020 successor, fans worldwide have been thrilled. The series features Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, a middle-aged man and teenage girl who unite to navigate an apocalyptic world overrun by fungal zombies. In the first season of The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie traversed the country, battling against the Firefly militia who aimed to exploit Ellie’s brain to develop a vaccine for the zombie contagion. However, in the second season, the pair find themselves pursued by the consequences of their past deeds.
Season 2 Featured Other Returning Stars and Newcomers
In the second season of The Last of Us, some fresh faces stepped into the limelight. Gabriel Luna portrayed Joel’s brother Tommy, a former Firefly who abandoned their aggressive tactics, and Kaitlyn Dever played Abby, a Firefly seeking retribution against Joel for killing her father in the first season. Unlike in the game sequel, where the Firefly connection was kept secret until later, in this TV series, Abby’s Firefly background is revealed early on. According to Druckmann, “When you’re playing as a character, there’s an immediate emotional bond with them.” Since we don’t have that direct empathy in the streaming series, other elements must be emphasized instead.
Ashley Johnson herself recently reminisced about her involvement with the popular franchise, particularly her close brush with portraying Ellie in its early stages. Johnson mentioned meeting Neil Druckman years ago for a potential role as Ellie, although she did not ultimately secure the part. Later on, Johnson returned to Naughty Dog studios to provide motion capture for Uncharted 4, an experience she still finds remarkable.
The Last of Us is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
