As Taylor Sheridan’s show 1923 resumes, some viewers find themselves growing tired of a prominent trait exhibited by its creator, Yellowstone.
2024 saw a surge of Sheridan productions concluding towards its end, with the last season of Yellowstone, the second season of Lioness, and the premiere of Landman airing in November. For some time, the small screen was dominated by the Dutton creator.
Additionally, along with an increase in television programs, there have been some criticisms voiced as well. Specifically, a common point of contention with Sheridan’s recent works is their overtly sexual themes in both plotlines and character development.
Now that 1923 Season 2 has arrived, it’s clear this Yellowstone spinoff is no exception.
1923 viewers slam “disturbing” scenes
Following the airing of the first episode of Season 2 in 1923, viewers have taken to the internet to criticize the graphic portrayals of sex and sexual violence by Taylor Sheridan, which appear frequently throughout the series.
The episode features two very distressing events. One occurs when we learn that Donald Whitfield is holding a young woman captive in his home for his own amusement, referring to her as his “toy.
On Spencer’s ship, an unsettling incident takes place as he awakens to find a crew member from the engine room being sexually assaulted by another man during the night.

In a more playful tone, we see Teonna making an effort to rest alongside Pete Plenty Clouds during her escape, which some viewers found intense or overwhelming in the initial episode.
One Redditor commented about TS’s Season 2 premiere: ‘What on earth is happening with this series? The first episode has three storylines centered around sexuality – the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable. It was suddenly thrown at us without pause. I previously enjoyed Landman, but Ainsley’s portrayal felt excessively sexualized, making it awkward to watch. Why is every plot in these shows focused on sex?

The situation involving James Bond (Tim Dalton’s character) and those women is offensive and unnecessary, another person concurred. “I skipped over it, but if there’s more of that, I might stop watching the series completely, despite my eagerness for Spencer to return and assist Cara.
The third individual switched it off during the following graphic love scene on the ship, Spencer. It was as if they exclaimed, ‘What in the world is happening here?’
A different person chimed in, “I was actually going to write a comment about this very topic. Generally, I can handle sexual content in shows, but the material in this one is quite distressing.
On previous occasions, Sheridan has faced criticism over similar issues. Both Landman and Lioness have also been criticized for suggestive themes, particularly explicit discussions between adults and children.
1923 Season 2 Episode 1 is available to stream on Paramount+ now.
