It’s common for shows on Amazon Prime Video to get canceled after just one season, but there are exceptions. Regrettably, the show “The Wheel of Time” fell into this category, getting cancelled after its third season release in the 2025 TV Schedule. While it may have been disappointing news for fans, some viewers didn’t seem surprised by the announcement, and now, certain Amazon Prime Video subscribers are sharing insights that I find convincing as well.
This past Friday was when news broke that Prime Video would not be renewing Wheel of Time for another season. Devastated fans flooded the comments of Prime Video’s Instagram and TikTok, calling for a renewal of the fantasy book-to-screen adaptation on every video or post in the past couple days.
Enthusiasts flocked to Reddit to voice their criticisms and deliberate over the production, with numerous individuals stating that the Amazon Original was destined for disappointment from the outset. Some contended that the series drove away a significant number of book fans due to inconsistencies in the plot early on. Interestingly, rather than assigning fault to the writers, most comments focused on perceived issues with Prime’s streaming service as a whole. Here are some points that particularly struck a chord with me:
- The series has remained a solid performer but its viewership has slipped’ Well, it took almost two years to release season 3, so yeah, ppl lost interest. – CpnLouie
- It also surely wasn’t helped along by the generally poor experience of using the Prime Video platform. Its many technical issues aside, it was always bad at letting you know that there is a new season of something you liked. – KarelKat
- The eight episode every two years format that Amazon uses is trash. Sucked in a fantasy setting like WoT, and sucks in a modern setting like Etoile. Too much story, not enough time. – AnSionnachan
- Viewership is also a very bad metric if it’s only based on viewership in the first weeks. There are so many shows coming out, that I’m only now coming around to watch season 3. And I’m probably not the only one. – SpaceSolaris
In line with KarelKat’s observation, if a platform fails to draw attention to a new season of a show a user has previously watched, it essentially becomes irrelevant for that viewer. The occasional absence of shows I’m currently watching on Prime from my home page suggests some underlying technical problems within the platform.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that a limited episode order, not exclusive to the cast, crew, or writers of “The Wheel of Time“, may potentially hinder a show’s progression. While this isn’t always true, there are situations where a season might seem incomplete with just eight to ten episodes. Such constraints could potentially lead to cliffhanger endings, which often fail to deliver the satisfying resolution that this Prime Video viewer desires.
SpaceSolaris makes a valid observation. We’re roughly ten years into the streaming era, and the number of viewers continues to be a significant discussion point. While viewership is indeed crucial, I think it’s worth considering that the timeframe over which it’s calculated might not always be fair or practical, in my opinion.
Streaming platforms have shown that TV series can experience revivals long after their original television premieres. Shows such as Suits, Schitt’s Creek, and Breaking Bad all saw significant streaming comebacks years later. It’s possible that a program from a platform like Amazon Prime Video could attract an audience following its debut. Even Cobra Kai, initially on YouTube and later moved to Netflix, became popular over time. Essentially, while some shows captivate viewers immediately, others might need time to establish a loyal fanbase.
Fans are tirelessly campaigning to prevent the cancellation of “The Wheel of Time.” Various petitions have been initiated with the aim of either persuading Amazon Prime Video to reconsider or attracting another broadcasting network or streaming service to take over the series. At present, no clear signs point towards the show’s salvation being imminent.
