For decades, FromSoftware has made its mark in the gaming world, but their latest release, the 2022 action RPG titled Elden Ring, has surpassed all their previous successes. By September 2024, this game had sold over 28.6 million copies across various platforms, outperforming the combined lifetime sales of Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro. Given Elden Ring’s extraordinary popularity, there have been speculations about whether FromSoftware might explore extending the IP to other forms of media. However, neither FromSoft nor its publisher Bandai Namco have officially confirmed that they are developing a film adaptation for Elden Ring, yet discussions about it abound.
Following the debut of the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, FromSoftware’s president Hidetaka Miyazaki expressed openness to an Elden Ring adaptation, but only if a powerful collaborator were involved. Subsequently, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, who crafted the world of Elden Ring, playfully hinted on his blog that a movie or TV series based on the game might be in development. Later, during an IGN interview in February 2025, Martin confirmed there were discussions about creating a film based on Elden Ring, although he remained tight-lipped. However, Martin mentioned that his role in such a project may be minimal due to his ongoing work on the final Game of Thrones novel, The Winds of Winter.
A Team of Elden Ring Fans Are Making an Anime Based on the Game
Based on the remarks from Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, it appears that an Elden Ring movie might not be coming out for a while yet. This news could be disappointing to many fans of the popular action RPG, given its filmic potential. However, there is indeed an unofficial Elden Ring adaptation in development, set to be released soon.
A Five-Minute Elden Ring Anime is Coming Out in Summer 2025
In the previous year, a content creator named Steins Alter unveiled their project – an anime-style short film based on Elden Ring. This fan-made production is expected to last for about five minutes. The film appears to include several famous bosses from Elden Ring, such as Malenia, the Black Blade, Radagon, and other characters. A 50-second teaser for this anime was uploaded on YouTube in July of 2024, attracting over a million views.
The initial release date for Steins Alter’s Elden Ring adaptation was set for late 2024, but has since been pushed back to summer 2025. To build anticipation for the film, Steins Alter shared a second work-in-progress trailer on X/Twitter recently. Although the animation in this trailer is not yet complete, reactions to it have been generally positive. A well-known Elden Ring player, Let Me Solo Her, expressed his excitement on X/Twitter after getting a sneak peek at the team working on the Elden Ring anime “behind the scenes.” In his opinion, they are creating something extraordinary. Let Me Solo Her reaffirmed his enthusiasm for the project, expressing hope that fans share his level of excitement.
Steins Alter’s Elden Ring Anime May Tide Fans Over Until an Official Elden Ring Film is Released
Approval from Let Me Solo Her for the Elden Ring anime is an encouraging signal. Despite its brevity, the dedication Steins Alter has put into such a project is quite remarkable. Although the Elden Ring anime isn’t officially sanctioned, it already seems rather faithful to FromSoftware’s original work, which sets it apart from some recent high-budget video game adaptations. While there’s no guarantee of a full-length Elden Ring film in the future, this could serve as an appetizer for fans until then.
