Fans call out Ready or Not over AI-generated content, upset by the lack of transparency on its Steam page

Despite Ready or Not still receiving criticism, the console launch sparked intense backlash due to what many fans perceive as excessive censorship impacting the PC version. The developers justified their decision to tone down dark themes for crossplay compatibility and mentioned that PC mods could potentially revert the changes, but this hasn’t seemed to appease anyone. Currently, the focus has shifted towards the game’s implementation of AI-generated content. However, this ongoing controversy doesn’t appear to be abating.

Too many eyebrows, too little clarity

Initially, Ready or Not debuted on Steam’s Early Access in December 2021. It soon garnered acclaim due to its authentic combat and nail-biting, high-risk room-by-room action. What truly set it apart from other tactical shooters was its somber atmosphere and graphic, gruesome aesthetics. However, following the recent PC update coinciding with the console launch, things have taken a turn. Some longtime players are so displeased, they’re even seeking refunds.

In the movie Ready or Not, it wasn’t long after its December 2023 release that people began noticing AI-generated content. This was particularly noticeable in posters and other promotional materials. More recently, a Reddit user named Ill-Consideration632 sparked renewed discussions about this topic by posting an image of a girl with an unusual number of eyebrows.

It appears that many of the images in this game, particularly those depicting individuals, are actually created by artificial intelligence. This fact has struck me, and I can’t help but wonder why this is the case. A closer inspection of most headshots in Brixley Talent makes it quite evident.

When version 1.0 debuted, I expected that the AI-generated textures would be replaced with handcrafted ones over time. However, that hasn’t been the case.

While I’m not a fan of using AI for poster assets, what really stands out to me is the oversight in adding multiple eyebrows – it speaks volumes about their attention to detail.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been noticing something peculiar about “Ready or Not,” developed by VOID Interactive. Strangely enough, there’s been no official confirmation from them regarding the use of AI-generated assets in the game. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if it were just a couple of instances here and there, but the community on Reddit is abuzz with examples that are hard to overlook. Players have been flagging not only AI-like posters, but also environmental art across various missions like Streamer level, Relapse, Voll’s house, and even the subtitles. It seems like these AI-created elements are everywhere in the game.

In January 2024, Steam revised its policy mandating developers to declare the use of generative AI in their projects. However, it appears that Ready or Not’s store listing does not disclose any such information. Several possibilities might account for this discrepancy.

The current AI disclosure policy on Steam is relatively fresh and somewhat ambiguous, which can potentially create loopholes. It appears that this rule primarily pertains to games during their pre-launch phase rather than ones already released. Since the game Ready or Not was launched in 2023, it predates Valve’s new policy introduction.
