Fans are uneasy about the sequel to open-world survival game, which is a hit on Steam. Subnautica 2 dev team undergoes big changes

A significant shift has taken place at the leadership of Unknown Worlds Entertainment. At present, the company developing Subnautica 2 is under the guidance of Steve Papoutsis, who previously held the position of CEO at Striking Distance studio, known for producing The Callisto Protocol.

In a new development, the previously referenced individual is set to assume the roles vacated by Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire. Despite Krafton (the publisher of the cited games) choosing to relieve these three from their leadership positions, they will continue to be involved in some other, as yet undisclosed capacity.

Krafton aimed to include the original founders and creators of the Subnautica series in the game’s creation process, but they wish them success in their future projects.

Some Reddit users are now voicing their worries, suggesting that the upcoming release of the second installment of the popular survival game might face difficulties due to recent shifts in the developer’s team. A few have gone as far as declaring the title “on shaky ground” before it even hits the shelves, expressing concerns about the sequel‘s future.

It’s not surprising that players are feeling apprehensive, considering what happened with two directors from Build A Rocket Boy studio who left just a week before the release of MindsEye. Given the poor quality of this game, it appears they didn’t want to be linked with what might become the worst game of 2025. Of course, the situation for Subnautica 2 could end up being entirely different. However, given its current state, those concerns about its condition certainly seem valid.

As a die-hard gamer, I can’t contain my excitement! Subnautica 2, the highly anticipated sequel, is finally making its way into early access by the close of 2025. That means I’ll be able to dive into this underwater adventure on both Steam and Xbox Series X/S as part of Game Preview. With the original version racking up an impressive 316,000 reviews on Valve’s platform, 97% of which were positive, I know the expectations are sky-high. But with that kind of track record, it’s hard not to be optimistic!
