The Beijing-based company, Rediance, has obtained global rights for the movie “Mother Bhumi,” which features the prominent Chinese actress, Fan Bingbing, and was directed by the renowned Malaysian filmmaker, Chong Keat Aun.
The firm unveiled a special behind-the-scenes photo during the approach of the Cannes Film Market, where potential buyers are gathering.
The movie revolves around Hong Im, a farmer who’s both a widow and a village healer by night. During the day, she works in the rice fields, but at night, she performs healing rituals for the villagers. As she uncovers truths about her husband’s demise, she battles to keep her balance while searching for answers not only for herself but also for her children.
In this captivating production, I’m delighted to share that alongside the talented Taiwanese actor Bai Run-yin, who won a Golden Horse Award for his role in “Old Fox,” also stars. His character, intriguingly, is none other than Hong Im’s son. Additionally, the renowned actress Natalie Hsu from Hong Kong takes on the role of Hong Im’s daughter, as portrayed by her exceptional performance in “Suk Mung.
Chong has been making a name for himself as an emerging talent in Malaysian filmmaking. His first movie, “The Story of Southern Islet” (2020), gained him recognition with the Best New Director award at the Golden Horse Awards and a Fipresci prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His subsequent production, “Snow in Midsummer” (2023), debuted at Venice and received the Firebird Award at Hong Kong, while his latest project, “Pavane for an Infant,” was screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival the previous year.
Meng Xie, CEO of Rediance, has been closely watching Chong’s cinematic journey since his critically-acclaimed debut. Moreover, he was deeply impressed by Fan Bingbing’s groundbreaking role in this movie. He looks forward to sharing this outstanding piece of work with film enthusiasts worldwide and industry professionals,” said Meng Xie.
Previously, Fan’s acting resume boasts titles like “Lost in Beijing,” “Buddha Mountain,” and “I Am Not Madame Bovary.” However, Fan Bingbing, a well-known Chinese actress, underwent a significant physical change for the role of “Mother Bhumi.” She shared during a press conference last year that her appearance altered so much that some friends visiting on set didn’t even recognize her. This transformation, according to Fan, is a testament to the dedication of the entire production team in helping her embody Mother Bhumi.
I’m involved in a film project that is jointly produced by Janji Pictures Production and Southern Islet Pictures from Malaysia, Southern Islet Pictures from Italy, and Volos Films Italia. The producers include Wong Kew Soon, who has worked on “Snow in Midsummer”, Stefano Centini, known for his work on “Heads or Tails” and “Magellan”, and Zoey Teng, who’s credited with “Pavane for an Infant”. Walter Fasano, renowned for his editing work on “Call Me by Your Name”, is also part of the team as an editing consultant.
At Cannes Film Festival, Rediance’s lineup features the documentary “Imago” by Déni Oumar Pitsaev in the Critics’ Week category, as well as “Lili” directed by Zhaoguang Luo and Shuhan Liao in the Short Films Competition.
