Fan Bingbing Confirmed to Star in Chong Keat Aun’s ‘Mother Bhumi’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As an ardent follower of Asian cinema, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming film “Mother Bhumi,” starring none other than the legendary Fan Bingbing. This Chinese superstar has not only graced our screens with her captivating performances but has also shown an unwavering dedication to her craft that is truly inspiring.

Renowned Chinese actress Fan Bingbing takes the lead in “Mother Bhumi,” a movie that marks the third feature film by Malaysian director Chong Keat Aun.

The movie focuses on a rural community situated along the Malaysia-Thailand boundary. It chronicles the life of Hong Im, a farmer who has just experienced the tragic demise of her spouse under puzzling circumstances. In an attempt to resolve the villagers’ everyday predicaments, Hong Im employs dark sorcery. However, she eventually comes face-to-face with a ghost that unveils a hidden truth concerning her husband’s untimely end.

The ensemble features Taiwanese actor Bai Run-yin, who won the Golden Horse Award for “Old Fox,” and Hong Kong actress Natalie Hsu, known for her role in “Suk Mung.” They play Hong Im’s son and daughter in this production.

Chong’s past projects include “The Story of the Southern Islet,” which was showcased at Locarno and Rotterdam, winning him the best new director award at the Golden Horse Awards in 2020. His subsequent work, “Snow in Midsummer,” was featured in Venice Days in 2023 and received nine nominations for Golden Horses. This multi-national Asian co-production delved into the race riots in Malaysia that claimed many lives of Malaysian-Chinese individuals. A discussion on this sensitive topic has long been avoided in Malaysia, and when the film was released in cinemas this summer it faced heavy censorship.

Mother Bhumi” is a collaborative project between Malaysia and Italy. Kew Soon Wong’s Janji Pictures, who produced Chong’s previous films, are teaming up with Stefano Centini’s Volos Films Italia, the Italian division of Taiwan-based Volos Films (“The Settlers”). In simpler terms, two production companies – one from Malaysia (Janji Pictures) and one from Italy (Volos Films Italia) – are coming together to produce “Mother Bhumi”. They both have connections with a larger company called Volos Films, based in Taiwan.

Filming for this project is happening now and should wrap up by November. The goal is to debut it at various film festivals around mid-2025.

After successfully navigating through a challenging time marked by a substantial income tax penalty, Fan has established herself as a frequent performer at European and Asian music festivals. Additionally, she has pursued opportunities beyond China’s borders.

One of Fan’s latest global projects was the film “Green Night” by Han Shuai, which screened at film festivals in Berlin, Busan, Singapore, and Santa Barbara. In this movie, Fan portrayed a Chinese woman who struggled under an oppressive marriage to her Korean husband and embarked on an exciting journey with a enigmatic green-haired girl, played by Lee Joo-young from “Broker.” Fan was honored with the Singapore International Film Festival’s Cinema Icon Award in 2023.

In addition, she offered a captivating workshop in Singapore that was tailored for fans. During this event, she reminisced warmly about her exceptional collaboration with Li Yu, having worked together on “Lost in Beijing,” “Buddha Mountain,” and “Double Xposure.” She also discussed her role as Blink in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” where she teamed up with Hugh Jackman.
