A family in China used artificial intelligence to create a digital version of their son after he died in a car accident, hoping to shield his elderly mother from the news.
An elderly woman in her 80s from Shandong province recently experienced the loss of her son in a traffic accident. Due to her age and a heart condition, her family decided not to tell her the news.
The man’s son reached out to AI specialist Zhang Zewe, hoping to create a digital replica of his father. To ensure the digital version was as realistic as possible, the family shared numerous photos, videos, and audio recordings of the man with the AI team.
The AI shares the man’s habits
The South China Morning Post reports that a mother video chats daily with an AI programmed to act like her son. The AI tells her he’s working in another city, explaining why he can’t come for visits.
She frequently encourages him to prioritize his health and lets him know how much she misses him. He acknowledges her advice and sends her similar warm wishes in return.
The AI recreation of the man is said to be incredibly lifelike, looking just like him and even mimicking his tendency to lean forward when someone is speaking.
According to reports, Zhang admits his work might seem manipulative, but he insists his AI team’s goal is to provide solace and support to people.
