Family cremates wrong body at funeral after morgue mix-up

A hospital has sincerely apologized to a family after a tragic mistake: they cremated the wrong person. The error, caused by a mix-up with labels, wasn’t discovered until after the funeral had already taken place.

A mix-up at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, led to the wrong body being sent to funeral directors. Unfortunately, the cremation had already occurred before the error was discovered.

One family thought they had lost their loved one forever, while another was denied the opportunity to have a meaningful farewell.

The Scottish Sun first reported the story, noting the family was deeply upset after discovering the news.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde stated the incident happened because of a mistake made by staff, and those involved have been temporarily suspended while the situation is investigated.

Dr. Scott Davidson, the health board’s medical director, apologized and acknowledged that their usual procedures hadn’t worked as expected. He said, “I sincerely apologize to the families impacted. We have strict processes for identifying and labeling bodies when they arrive at our mortuaries, and throughout the time they are in our care until they are released to funeral homes.”

We deeply regret that proper procedures weren’t followed in this case, causing further pain to two families already going through a very hard time,” Davidson said. “We immediately began investigating what happened and will use what we learn to prevent similar issues in the future.
