In the movie titled “F1”, Sonny Hayes, a former Formula One driver who experienced a devastating crash in his career, is coaxed out of retirement to mentor a promising newcomer, Damson Idris, for the Apex Grand Prix competition. This film was directed by Kosinski, who worked with Tom Cruise on “Top Gun: Maverick”, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, along with real-life Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton. Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon are also part of the supporting cast.

At an online news briefing held recently, Kosinski shared insights about the movie’s production. He confessed that he developed an interest in Formula 1 racing after binge-watching Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” while in lockdown due to the COVID pandemic.

Personally, I found the first season of the show captivating because it zeroed in on the lesser-known teams, the underdogs, rather than the usual front-runners like Ferrari, Mercedes, or Red Bull. I believed there was a compelling narrative to unfold about an underdog team striving not for the championship, but simply to claim victory in just one race against these giants of the sport.

Kosinski and his team followed the Formula 1 circuit for an entire year to film at actual races. He stated, “We’d be given about 10-15 minutes where we needed Brad and Damson in their cars, with warm tires, ready to race as soon as practice ended. As soon as they drove out onto the track, we’d have our cameras set up, recording, and I had to capture these scenes during those quick, intense, high-speed moments. However, it’s worth noting that the crowd you see in the stands was indeed there. I think the spectators were unaware that Brad Pitt was driving the car they were watching.

“F1” opens in theaters June 27 from Apple and Warner Bros. See more reactions below.
