An “Extraction” TV series has been greenlit at Netflix, EbMaster has learned.
In this role as a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Omar Sy will be steering the course of an upcoming series, nestled within the same captivating universe as the Netflix film franchise. This intriguing production has been greenlit for eight compelling episodes by our beloved streaming colossus, Netflix. If you recall, the initial “Extraction” movie, featuring the mighty Chris Hemsworth, dropped on Netflix screens in 2020. Fast forward to 2023, and we saw Hemsworth reprising his role in the sequel. These action-packed films were adapted from the graphic novel “Ciudad” by Ande Parks.
Glen Mazzara takes on the roles of writer, producer in charge, and overseer. The Russo Brothers (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo), Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi serve as executive producers through AGBO, while Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin also hold the title of executive producer. In addition to penning the screenplay for both movies, Joe Russo acts as producer alongside Anthony Russo, Gitter, and Schwerin. Hargrave directs both films, with production handled by AGBO.
Mazzara expressed his gratitude, stating, ‘I feel incredibly fortunate.’ He considers Omar to be a tremendous talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have graciously accepted me into the AGBO family. Working with the Netflix team is an absolute dream come true, making my luck undeniable.”
“Mazzara expressed his good fortune by saying, ‘I’m one lucky man.’ He believes Omar is a gifted individual. Being welcomed into the AGBO family by Joe, Anthony, and Angela feels truly special. The team at Netflix is the best I’ve ever collaborated with, making my luck evident.”
Both versions maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
The action-packed show ‘Extraction’ serves as our backdrop. It tells the story of a mercenary named Sy, who embarks on a perilous mission to free hostages in Libya. Caught amidst warring factions and relentless assassins, this series explores the emotional battles fought by complex and imperfect characters, each grappling with pain, deceit, and decisions that could mean life or death.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of Scripted Series, announced that viewers will be excited as we explore further into the ‘Extraction’ universe: “With Omar Sy taking the helm, our partnership with the Russos, along with Glen Mazzara, promises even more of the action-packed journeys fans adore from the ‘Extraction’ series,” he added.
The French thriller series “Lupin” on Netflix keeps Sy employed, featuring him as Assane Diop, a cunning thief modeled after Arsène Lupin from literature. To date, the show has broadcast 17 episodes over two seasons, with additional installments being produced. Upon its debut, “Lupin” received high praise from critics and is now among the top 10 most-viewed non-English language shows on Netflix.
The hit French thriller series “Lupin” on Netflix maintains Sy’s career, with him portraying Assane Diop, a thief resembling Arsène Lupin from books. So far, the show has aired 17 episodes across two seasons, and new ones are underway. When it initially came out, “Lupin” was applauded by critics and now stands among the top 10 most-watched non-English language Netflix shows of all time.
Sy is recognized for acting in series akin to “SAV des émissions” and movies including “The Intouchables,” “Jurassic World,” “Chocolat,” “The Killer,” and “The Takedown.
AGBO is delighted to join forces with Netflix once more, this time to broaden the ‘Extraction’ universe into a fresh medium,” commented Russo-Otstot, creative chief at AGBO. “We were motivated to weave additional tales within this expansive franchise, delving deeper into the theme of heroic yet complex mercenaries. Glen Mazzara has an impressive knack for sophisticated and nuanced storytelling in genre series, and we’re ecstatic to have the remarkable skills of Omar Sy as the focal point of our action-packed, multi-layered narrative.
Beyond the two “Extraction” movies, AGBO has also created the Netflix film “The Gray Man,” featuring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas. This project was jointly directed by Joe and Anthony, while Joe collaborated with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely on the screenplay. Moving forward, AGBO will debut “The Electric State” on Netflix, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Once again, Joe and Anthony are taking on the director’s roles, with Markus and McFeely contributing to the script.
Mazzara is mainly recognized for his work on “The Walking Dead,” where he served as showrunner during its second and third seasons. He was also a writer and later an executive producer on the pioneering FX series “The Shield.” Among other projects, he has worked on “Damien,” “The Rookie,” and “Beacon 23.
SY is represented by CAA, Creative Artists Agency, Agency Adéquat, and Ziffren Brittenham. Mazzara is represented by CAA and lawyer Philip Klein. AGBO is represented by CAA as well.
