Expocine, Latin America’s Largest Movie Theatre Trade Show, is a One-Stop Shop for Brazil’s Distributors, Exhibitors

As a seasoned movie buff with over two decades of immersion in the dynamic world of cinema, I can confidently say that the Expocine 2024 event in Sao Paulo is like a dream come true for those who share my passion for films. With its rich lineup of panels, workshops, screenings, and trade fair, it serves as a vibrant melting pot for industry professionals from across Latin America and beyond.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil, the significant and influential business event for the motion picture theater industry across Latin America, known as Expocine 2024, will be held from October 8-11. This is taking place as the Brazilian theatrical market gradually rebounds following the downturn during the COVID-19 period and the impact of Hollywood’s double strikes.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the number of movie screens in Brazil, which took a hit during the pandemic, is now at 3,530 – slightly more than the 3,507 we had back in December 2019. However, our Box Office (B.O.) is slowly bouncing back, though it hasn’t quite returned to its pre-pandemic glory yet. This is primarily due to the scarcity of U.S. films, a consequence of Hollywood going on a double strike.

According to Lucio Otoni, president of the Federation of Exhibitors in Brazil (FENEEC), Brazilian exhibitors are quite resilient. He expressed optimism that the years 2025 and 2026 will see improvement not just due to a stronger selection of films, but also because the Brazilian economy is on an upward trend.

With the market rebounding, it’s anticipated that Expocine 2024 – now in its 11th iteration – will at least match the high attendance of 2,700 attendees seen in 2019, according to Marcelo Lima, CEO of Tonks, the event organizer.

Approximately 7 out of every 10 individuals attending Expocine usually have careers in the exhibition or distribution industries. The other 30%, however, encompass film producers, manufacturers of theater equipment and concession supplies, as well as service providers within these sectors.

The vast majority of the participants hail from various regions across Brazil, yet it’s noticeable that many attendees come from Sao Paulo, as this city is home to most of the biggest distributors and exhibitors in the country.

Lima mentioned that Expocine benefits from a significant number of attendees being executives from various South American nations, specifically Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Given the unfavorable exchange rates and proximity, they often prefer Expocine over similar events held on other continents.

2024’s Expo will take place at two locations, which are just 150 meters apart, close to the iconic Paulista Avenue. The renowned Renaissance Hotel and the bustling Cine Marquise multiplex are situated nearby.

The schedule for the event features discussions, hands-on sessions, lectures, and film showcases by vendors for attendees, along with an industry trade show.

2024’s Expocine event is centered around the theme “Linking cinema to tomorrow” for its main discussions. Notable speakers include Lima, Hernán Viviano (VP Latin America at Warner and Universal), Iafa Britz (director of Migdal Filmes production company), Marcio Fraccaroli (general director of Paris Filmes distributor and producer company), and Marcos Barros (president of Cinesystem exhibitor).

Other panels will tackle topics like international collaborations, attracting younger audiences to cinemas, the ten-year evolution of digitalization in Brazilian exhibition circuits, biographical films, the decision between buying or renting projectors, the surge of interest in true crime narratives, the role of social media on theater attendance, and the characteristics of moviegoers.

As a film enthusiast, I’m eagerly looking forward to delving into workshops that shed light on how advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Brazil’s forthcoming tax system might reshape our beloved cinematic world in the upcoming years.

This year’s trade fair, which features exhibits for theater equipment vendors, snack makers, and service suppliers, is being enlarged and will now span across two stories of the Renaissance Hotel.

It appears that the presentations and screenings at Cine Marquise’s theaters are the main attraction for distributors at this event.

Igor Kupstas, head of O2 Play (the distribution division of O2, a prominent Brazilian production company), is set to unveil Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” for its Brazilian premiere on October 31.

Kupstas explained to EbMaster that distribution involves winning over exhibitors by convincing them of the merits of his movie. About twenty days before the release, he will present his film to all exhibitors nationwide. He’s up against other distributors, as each exhibitor may already have several films in mind for the specific date. The presentation is an opportunity for him to persuade the exhibitors, making them consider his film.

Marcio Fraccaroli from Paris Filmes stated that since everyone involved is already gathered, we’re taking advantage of this chance to display our upcoming movies for the next six months. The presentations of Brazilian films are handled by directors, actors, and screenwriters themselves, as they have unique insights into their own productions.

Lucio Otoni underscores the significance of Expocine for small and medium-sized exhibition businesses. He notes that Brazil’s theatrical market is one of the least consolidated in the world. The major players – Cinemark, Cinepolis, Kinoplex, Araujo, and UCI – controlled approximately 59% of the total ticket sales (118 million), 65% of the box office revenue ($474 million), and 46% of the screens in Brazil during 2023. The remaining market share is held by around 100 smaller exhibitors, many of them being family-owned companies operating a few screens each.

Expocine offers underdog film industry participants insights into forthcoming movies, just as major exhibitors do. Furthermore, they participate in the Expocine trade show, which provides them with all necessary equipment and services from various vendors, since all suppliers are present.” (He stated)
