As an Overwatch veteran who’s been through the rise and fall of pharma-drake, the dance of the endorphins with Tracer’s recall, and the heartache of a Hanzo arrow missing by millimeters, I can confidently say that these experimental modes bring a breath of fresh air to the game. The return of 6v6 in Season 14 is like reuniting with an old friend, albeit one who’s had a facelift and some new moves up their sleeve.
Following the release of Overwatch 2, the shift from a 6-player vs 6-player team format to a 5-player vs 5-player format has been one of the most contentious changes, with many players expressing their opinions on it. Some have adapted, but others have linked ongoing problems such as balance difficulties and tank role burnout directly to this change, and they’ve been vocal in advocating for a return to the original 6-player vs 6-player format.
It appears the developers are taking our suggestions seriously, as they’ve announced that 6v6 gameplay will return in Season 14, but as an experimental feature.
Experimental 5v5 and 6v6 Modes Announced for Overwatch 2 Seasons 13 and 14
In the most recent Director’s Update post, game leader Aaron Keller announced plans for trial versions of team battles in Overwatch 2 during Season 14. These trials will occur every two weeks, showcasing various adaptations of the 6v6 format such as the “Minimum 1, Maximum 3” mode and the more conventional 2-2-2 role setup.

In the “Min 1, Max 3” setting, you must have at least one character filling each role, yet you can have as many as three characters for added team variety and flexibility. On the other hand, reverting to the traditional 2-2-2 arrangement will recreate the original Overwatch setup, but with Overwatch 2’s improvements, enabling both veterans and newcomers to enjoy a 6v6 gameplay experience in two different formats.
Season 14 – 6v6 Test Modes
- Min 1, Max 3
- Date: December 17
- Each role must include at least one hero, with a maximum of three.
- 2-2-2
- Date: Early January
- Traditional 6v6 format with Overwatch 2 balance.
Furthermore, Season 13 brings about team modes for 5v5, such as “Restrict 2” where every role can only use two characters, and “Kingmaker,” an exclusive twist on “Restrict 2,” which bestows a strong bonus on the sole hero in each role.
Season 13 – 5v5 Test Modes
- Limit 2
- Coming soon
- Limits each role to two heroes, with tanks balanced for Open Queue.
- Kingmaker
- Mid-November to Early December
- Similar to Limit 2, but with a buff for the single hero in each role.
In Seasons 13 and 14, Overwatch 2 is taking daring leaps with these experimental gameplay modes. Keep an eye out, as we’ll keep you updated on player reactions and any fresh details regarding these testing phases.
