Fans of Prince can look forward to another opportunity for a spiritual immersion at Lake Minnetonka, as its waters are set to be cleaner than they’ve ever been!
On March 5th, “Purple Rain” will be given a special one-night re-release by Warner Bros. Discovery, exclusively at Dolby Cinemas. The film will be shown in stunning quality with Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) and the immersive audio of Dolby Atmos. This presentation surpasses even the 4K disc version released for the film’s 40th anniversary in May 2024, which was digitally restored from an 8K scan of the original 35mm camera negative and color-graded for HDR. However, it was adjusted to meet the cinema standards of Dolby Vision.

In Albert Magnoli’s direction, not only the visuals but also the powerful performances by Prince and The Revolution, The Time, and Apollonia 6 significantly contribute to the movie. Previously, the film’s audio was meticulously restored for home video using original Dolby Stereo archived 35mm magnetic film sources that preserve the separate dialogue, music, and effects (DME) tracks.
Instead, Warner and Dolby designed an innovative audio presentation specifically for the Dolby Atmos Cinema format, blending the original refurbished components with a 5.1 multi-channel mix that was initially produced for the 20th anniversary of “Purple Rain.
One of the most cherished movie musicals ever made, “Purple Rain” by Prince, generated $70 million upon its debut in 1984, catapulting him to instant stardom as a Minnesota native. Over time, it’s been celebrated on numerous occasions and since Prince’s passing in 2016, the movie has gained additional recognition as a significant milestone in his career. It offers a unique cinematic journey – one that stands out even within his filmography. Therefore, watching this classic film on the big screen with top-quality visuals and audio is truly a rare treat.
The movie ‘Purple Rain’ is going to be shown at every Dolby Cinema location in the United States (AMC Theatres) as well as at all Dolby Cinema locations within the Odeon theaters in the U.K.
