Exclusive Sneak Peek: ‘Space Cowboy’ Doc Captures Skydiving Legend Joe Jennings’ Daring Stunt to Film a Car Plummeting from the Heavens

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for tales of resilience and adventure, I find myself captivated by the upcoming documentary “Space Cowboy.” The life story of skydiving cinematographer Joe Jennings, as depicted in this 98-minute masterpiece directed by Marah Strauch and Bryce Leavitt, is a rollercoaster ride that mirrors the highs and lows of his thrilling profession.

In the documentary “Space Cowboy,” shown at the Toronto Film Festival, we delve into the highs and lows of Joe Jennings, a daring skydive cameraman. The intriguing concept of Joe’s ambition to capture footage of a car without a roof, plummeting from the sky with four people inside, serves as the basis for the film’s plot structure.

Jennings’ prosperous marriage and his long career of taking iconic aerial photographs for extreme sports events, TV commercials during the Super Bowl, and films like “Charlie’s Angels” and “XXX”, are all elements in the 98-minute documentary directed by Marah Strauch (“Sunshine Superman”) and Bryce Leavitt. This film chronicles his life story.

However, the document candidly tackles the challenging phases of Jennings’ life, encompassing a tumultuous childhood, struggles with depression, and the tragic demise of his friend and shared passion for skydiving, Rob Harris, during the mid-nineties.

EbMaster discussed the upcoming premiere of “Space Cowboy” with Jennings, Strauch, and Leavitt, as it is set to debut at TIFF this coming Friday.

How did this doc come about?

Approximately five years past, Bryce enlisted me to record his skydiving adventures for a project he was working on. The thrill of skydiving piqued his curiosity not only about the sport itself, but also about the community and my work. As a result, we maintained contact and eventually became friends. After some time had passed, Bryce inquired if he could acquire the rights to my life story. His intrigue was what convinced me. Therefore, I granted him the rights, thinking perhaps this opportunity would materialize, and it did.

Hey Marah and Bryce, could you tell me how you came up with organizing the document centered on Jennings’ thrilling “flying car” act?

Translation: It’s delightful on a structural level to discover Joe when he’s immersed in something he adores and is genuinely enthusiastic about. His efforts to make this car take flight reveal both his passion and his humor. I also found it effective, serving as a refreshing break from some of the more somber aspects of his narrative.

Hey there, I can only imagine the heartache you’ve been going through, losing not just one, but two close friends, Rob Harris and Patrick de Gayardon, both in the tragic circumstances of skydiving. In such difficult times, it’s natural to question everything, so I’m curious, have you ever thought about taking a break from skydiving?

At certain moments, I contemplated switching to a different activity. I felt more exposed than both Rob and Patrick, given their exceptional skills and attention to detail. When they passed away, I understood that if such an incident could happen to either of them, then it could certainly happen to me or anyone else. Skydiving carries an inherent risk, and no one is exempt from this danger. I recall doubting and considering quitting; the response was always a firm ‘no’. I’m determined to continue. I still adore every moment of it.

What was it like rehashing your childhood, your depression and these tragic deaths?

Jennings: During filming, I recalled mentioning to Bryce and Marah that these experiences are part of my personal journey. Depression has come and gone throughout various stages of my life, often intensely so. It seemed they were eager to discuss the challenging aspects of my life, and I repeatedly assured them, “Yes, but do remember, this movie isn’t a sad one. My life has been incredibly fulfilling, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world.
