Exciting Update on Crazy Rich Asians 2: What the Writer Revealed!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve received some exciting news about “Crazy Rich Asians 2“! As one of the movie’s lead writers, I’ve had the privilege of staying in the loop. It’s been almost seven years since the release of the first film directed by John M. Chu, who recently brought “Wicked” to life for Universal. Yet, there’s a lingering anticipation that we might get another installment based on the captivating series.

In a private chat with TopMob during the debut of Slanted at SXSW, Amy Wang, the writer, shared updates about the upcoming film “Crazy Rich Asians 2”. She talked about the movie’s current production status, which happens to be the latest update from someone connected to the romantic comedy sequel.

Wang stated that, as far as she is aware, the event is still planned; however, everyone seems to be moving at a deliberate pace to ensure that the sequel surpasses its predecessor in quality.

A: “Could you provide us with the latest news about the progress of ‘Crazy Rich Asians 2’? Is it indeed in production, and if so, when might we expect to watch it?

Apologies for any inconvenience, but I must clarify that while the event is still scheduled, it seems there’s a delay due to everyone ensuring the script is flawless and outstanding. They aim to surpass the previous installment, hence the patience.

After numerous years of work on this movie, there’s been an announcement for a follow-up to the critically praised romance, which was made in August 2018, just following the initial release. Since that time, not much has been shared publicly.

In our recent updates regarding the project, I, as a follower, recall hearing about it from Casey Bloys, the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Studio, during an interview with Variety in 2024. He shared that the studio was intending to create a series based on this beloved property.

The sequel to “Crazy Rich Asians,” titled simply “Crazy Rich Asians 2,” was poised to build on the blockbuster success of its predecessor, which premiered in cinemas in August 2018 and received almost unanimous praise. Directed by John M. Chu, the initial film introduced us to Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she journeyed to Singapore alongside her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding). Upon their arrival, an unexpected revelation unfolded – Nick had been concealing a significant secret: his family was among the wealthiest in Southeast Asia.

It was anticipated that the follow-up would feature several members of the original cast reprising their characters. Among them are Gemma Chan as Astrid Leong-Teo, Lisa Lu as Shang Su Yi, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin, and Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Sung-Young.

What Do We Know About Crazy Ruch Asians 2?

After nearly a decade of production, the anticipation among fans for “Crazy Rich Asians 2” has noticeably decreased. The initial film was an enormous success at the box office, leading many to believe it would launch a successful and prosperous franchise for Warner Bros.; however, progress on the second movie seems to have stalled (for now).

Rest assured, the person responsible for writing the script of the forthcoming sequel remains firm about its realization. It’s simply a question of time before it comes to fruition.

The main cause for the long gap between Crazy Rich Asians movies was the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, which pushed back the movie release even more than it otherwise would have due to external factors.

One significant reason for the delay was the departure of one of the original movie’s main creators during the preliminary stages of the sequel. Specifically, the writer from the first film, Adele Lim, parted ways with the project following difficult contract talks in September 2019.

In essence, due to a dispute over pay inequality between her and the studio following the success of the initial movie, Lim decided to part ways with the project. At that moment, she expressed her intention to withdraw if equal compensation wasn’t provided. Consequently, she chose to focus on other opportunities instead.

Since that time, progress on the sequel has continued steadily behind the scenes at Warner Bros. However, no specific details about its release have been disclosed yet. Despite their schedules filling up with other projects, there appears to be a strong desire among the main cast members to bring the movie to life at some point in the near future.
