Evil Recap: Demon Detected

As a long-time fan of this show, I’ve grown quite fond of Ben’s character and his journey. But man, it seems like things are getting tougher for him by the day. Poor Ben, with his brain situation worsening, is now seeing and hearing jinn, suffering from massive migraines, and blacking out for long periods. He doesn’t even remember asking Renée to move in or that strange video message he sent her!

Although it’s risky to rely on Sheryl Lauria for many things, you can count on her keeping her word when it comes to her granddaughters. Long-time friend Leland, remember that time long ago when Sheryl warned you not to interfere? She wasn’t joking when she threatened to harm you if you tried to take one of the girls. True to form, we resume our story with Leland back home, discovering chaos and a chilling warning etched in blood on the floor, while Sheryl, brandishing a knife, prepares for an unexpected confrontation.

Leland pays heed to Sheryl’s warnings in earnest when she reveals that, aside from some for herself, she annihilated his entire stash of the revitalizing elixir. This substance is said to cause an accelerated aging process, equivalent to 20 years in just 20 days, if not consumed. The concept might be unpleasant, but watching this unfold is intriguing. Sheryl and Leland exchange violent attacks towards each other. “Too bad you’re lacking there,” Sheryl remarks regretfully, forced to abandon her threat before seeking assistance from Kristen and ending up in the hospital. Both manage to survive their injuries, but it seems unlikely they will both pull through this ordeal. As Sheryl tearfully reassures her daughter that she’ll “regain [her] trust,” I express concern for her wellbeing. Despite the grim situation, it’s captivating to witness the escalation of Sheryl and Leland’s twisted bond.

The situation is getting more complicated everywhere, as expected, given that we’ve reached the second part of the season. Matters have become particularly intense at the Bouchard house, where it turns out there’s a real-life shortcut to Hell lurking beneath it. Although my expertise in property comes from watching “Selling Sunset,” I can only imagine that this unique trait will significantly boost its market value.

What led us to make this realization? Truth be told, we probably should have anticipated it given the large hole in the basement wall that has never been accounted for. However, through an encounter with a spooky train conductor, we eventually uncovered this information.

I’ve heard some harrowing tales in my line of work, but this one really takes the cake. This unfortunate soul, a train engineer no less, is burdened with a heavy conscience. He’s seen too many lives end on his watch, powerless to prevent it. The latest victim, a young girl in her prom dress, keeps reappearing at the same spot and getting dragged away by something sinister. Listening to him retell these stories leaves an air of quiet trauma hanging over our team. Jefferson White, who portrays this engineer so brilliantly, truly brings the character’s haunted state to life. The weight of his guilt is palpable – it’s a chilling experience that will stay with me for quite some time.

David and Ben are the ones who end up traveling on the train that evening. Our engineer encounters a ghost yet again at a section of track he refers to as “the Death Stretch,” which they don’t notice. Upon disembarking to investigate, they come across two intriguing discoveries. Firstly, David spots a horned demon – this could be the creature dragging the prom ghost away. Secondly, as the demon flees, jumping off the bridge they stand on, the men find themselves directly above Kristen’s house. The revelation that Kristen resides under “the Death Stretch” left me applauding in awe. A set of claw marks along the bridge leading to her backyard adds to their suspicions, prompting David to suggest examining her entire house. Although Kristen vehemently opposes this idea, her daughters secretly investigate using a Demon Tracker app. They encounter an entity that expresses its intent to harm them, leading the girls to plead for an exorcism on their home. Needless to say, this is the fourth bizarre turn of events in my recap.

An exorcism, which Kristen refers to as a “minor one,” is taking place at her request following her secret encounters with Sister Andrea being exposed. Sister Andrea is now participating in the ritual alongside David to purge their home. In Kristen’s bathroom, some leftover traces of Tommy, the Grief Demon, are found. Despite his absence (#WhereIsTommy), the most startling revelation lies hidden in the basement. According to Kristen, this hole was there when they purchased the house. A contractor was supposed to fill it up, but he failed to do so, and they neglected it for all these years. Quite astonishing, if accurate.

Sister Andrea is unfazed as she ventures in, discovering something far more peculiar than a bat colony. She pursues a lengthy pathway that leads her deeper and deeper until she encounters Lou, the demon from the train tracks. Unlike her holy water, crucifixes, and prayers, they have no effect on him in this realm. He doesn’t explicitly confirm it, but the trail seems to be leading to Hell. His power is greater here than Sister Andrea’s, causing her wrist to burn when he grasps it.

As a seasoned paranormal investigator with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from ghostly apparitions to possession cases that would give even the bravest souls goosebumps. And let me tell you, the recent developments at the Bouchard residence have left me more than a little concerned.

The Bouchards aren’t alone in facing challenging times. Poor Ben, unfortunately, is dealing with worsening health issues. He’s been experiencing hallucinations of jinn, debilitating migraines, and extended periods of unconsciousness. He can’t recall asking Renee to move in with him or a call where he mentioned buying scented candles. Strangely enough, that conversation isn’t recorded on his phone. And I certainly won’t forget about the time he sent her a video of himself singing “Baby Come Back” and pleading for her to stay.

Ben’s experience is becoming increasingly disturbing, as he grapples with unexplained phenomena that challenge his scientific understanding. Recently, during the course of his work and particularly over the past few months, he has encountered more and more unexplained occurrences. A conversation with his sister Karima about their late parents adds another layer of mystery. Ben recalls how their father used to suffer from migraines, and asks Karima for any remedies she may know. Sadly, she reveals that their father had been unfaithful to their mother for years, using the migraines as a convenient excuse to leave the house. After their mother’s passing, the migraines ceased entirely. Once again, Ben finds himself questioning his perception of reality, this time in a deeply personal and emotional context.

During the exorcism, Ben’s dialogue with Kristen reveals how deeply disturbed and confused he is. The encounter has made him question his beliefs and desires. He confesses, “I thought I had a grasp on what I believed, what I wanted.” However, he now finds himself grappling with life’s enigmatic nature. Overwhelmed, Ben admits that he’s struggling to understand the immense evil he witnesses in the world, an evil for which there is no rational explanation. This newfound awareness that his understanding may have been flawed and that science cannot provide all the answers leaves Ben reeling.

He seems deeply depressed by what’s happening, but does his final conversation with Renée point to a less cynical outcome for the guy? He’s completely confused by the Ben in the video Renée shows him. That guy is nothing like him. He is open and vulnerable. In an unexpected moment, Ben tells Renée that maybe he could learn to be more like the other Ben. He clearly sees something in this other version of himself that he wishes he had. It’s such a powerful character moment. In another surprising moment, Renée turns him down — that’s some really sound decision-making coming from the woman who runs a cult. I mean, I love Ben, but let’s maybe not be dating the man who is blacking out and blaming it on a jinn, even if it may be true. Especially if it may be true! Leave helping Ben to the experts. (David and Kristen, obviously, do you even know me?)

Church Bulletin

• The heartfelt discussion between Kristen and Sister Andrea about Lynn is beautiful. Kristen expresses concern over her brilliant and compassionate daughter potentially living a life devoted to cleaning for men. (A nod to Fenna and the tranquil monastery scene is appreciated!) Sister Andrea reassures Kristen, explaining she has no intention of pressuring or persuading Lynn into becoming a nun; instead, she merely intends to provide truthful answers to her queries – and will answer any questions Kristen may have as well. It seems they are forming a strong connection.

• “It’s like I’m right back in Catholic school. A nun tells me what to do, and I fucking do it.”

“I can’t believe what my girls have gotten themselves into. Laura trying out chewing tobacco at school? It feels like they’ve taken on some rough dockworker habits!”

In another intriguing turn of events in Leland and Sheryl’s dispute: While Leland tends to his injury, Timmy shrieks in protest. However, upon attempting to listen to the recorded therapy sessions of Kristen, he finds they have been erased. Michael Emerson masterfully portrays his intense “YOU BITCH!” reaction.
