As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for historical dramas and a soft spot for lavish costumes, I am absolutely thrilled that HBO is bringing back “The Gilded Age” for another round! This show has been a delightful escape into the opulent world of late-19th-century New York high society, and I can’t wait to see what fresh intrigues and scandals await us in season three.
HBO is returning with the third season of “The Gilded Age,” offering more than just stunning costumes. This series, set in late-19th-century New York high society, is a delight due to several reasons, as Vulture critic Kathryn VanArendonk has pointed out in her list of 11 reasons. On June 17, we were given a sneak peek into season three, and the logline suggests that it will delve into significant economic and social changes during this era, with the old guard being replaced, leaving New York society in turmoil. As for Cynthia Nixon, it seems she might be taking on a role as a powerful businesswoman in the new season. Here’s what we currently know about season three of “The Gilded Age,” including its new cast members.
Any new socialites getting dressed up?
JP Morgan is making his appearance in an era that brought him immense wealth, as announced by HBO on August 12. Bill Camp will portray the investment banker who may clash with George Russell regarding the future of the railroad industry, while Paul Alexander Nolan will play the role of Alfred Merrick, another businessman whom the Russells are eager to negotiate with for potential business deals.
Intriguingly enough, I find myself drawn to the refined Kirklands, albeit not quite Costco-level grandeur. This season, we welcome Dr. William Kirkland, a son with a promising future as a bachelor, into the fold. Oh la la! Phylicia Rashad graces our screens as the regal matriarch, Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland, a woman of lofty standards and a sharp wit. In contrast to his social circle, Dr. William, played by Jordan Donica from ‘Charmed’, seems more open-minded. His father, Frederick Kirkland, a revered pastor of a prominent Black church in Newport, will be brought to life by Brian Stokes Mitchell. Victoria Clark takes on the role of Joan Carlton, a woman of aristocratic heritage who finds herself entangled in a tricky and offending predicament. Leslie Uggams joins as Mrs. Ernestine Brown, a dear friend to the Kirkland family.
The tale surrounding the Russell family expands, as Merritt Wever takes on the role of Monica O’Brien, Bertha Russell’s long-lost sister. Simultaneously, Peggy forges new relationships; Lisagay Hamilton is cast as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, a renowned Black suffragist who motivates Peggy to champion her cause. Jessica Frances Dukes portrays Athena Trumbo, Dorothy’s first cousin, who encourages Peggy in her writing endeavors. Hattie Morahan joins the cast as Lady Sarah Vere, the sister of the Duke of Buckingham, and she harbors a dislike for the Russells. Lastly, Andrea Martin has been added to the ensemble as Madame Dashkova, a medium who asserts her ability to converse with the deceased in this Gilded Age setting.
Although it’s unclear which actors will reappear in the third season, the second season featured Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, and Harry Richardson, along with several others. The story primarily centered around a struggle for prime seats at the opera. By the way, we’re pretty sure there’s someone on Grindr eagerly anticipating Ashlie Atkinson’s return as Mrs. Fish.
