The popular CBS comedy Ghosts will be back for a sixth season. The show, which started in 2021 and is based on a British series, was renewed for both Seasons 5 and 6 in February 2025. This double-season renewal demonstrates CBS’s strong belief in the show’s success as a funny and engaging supernatural comedy.
Following the Season 5 debut, Ghosts quickly became the most-watched show on Amazon’s Prime Video On Demand. This is unusual for a show that originally airs on traditional television. Critics are also loving the new season, giving Ghosts Season 5 a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What Happened in Ghosts Season 5?
Okay, so season five of Ghosts jumps right back into the chaos where we left off! It’s seriously intense – Sam’s husband, Jay, is literally fighting with a demon – Elias Woodstone, no less – over who gets his soul. And Sam? Well, she does what any loving (and slightly supernatural) wife would do – she offers up her own soul to save both Jay and her first husband, Pete. But even with that huge sacrifice, the funny stuff just keeps on coming!
In Season 5 of Ghosts, Thor’s son, Bjorn, gets married, creating a tricky situation for Sam and Jay as they try to maintain a normal facade. The season also welcomes back a familiar face who starts working with Mahesh, leading to new storylines involving the ghosts.
After discovering an ancient Egyptian tomb beneath Woodstone Mansion – a property originally bought by Hetty Woodstone and her husband – Sam and Jay find themselves in a new adventure. Season 5 includes a special Thanksgiving episode where Sam and Jay celebrate the holiday at home with the mansion’s ghostly residents, with Sassappi’s approval.
The season’s first half concludes with a moving two-part episode. After Flower sabotages her TV interview, Sam regrets ever being able to see ghosts. Carol offers her a chance to experience a life where she never had this ability, but ultimately Sam decides she prefers her life as it is.
Who Stars in CBS’ Ghosts?
The show features a talented group of actors who have been with it from the start, and each ghost character brings a unique sense of humor and represents a different time period. But the story really centers around Sam and Jay Arondekar, played by Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, who are the living owners of Woodstone Mansion – a house Sam inherited.
One of the things I absolutely love about Ghosts is the ensemble of spirits haunting the house – each one is so unique! Brandon Scott Jones is brilliant as Isaac Higgintoot, a Revolutionary War captain who’s a bit of a snob, but you can’t help but adore him. And Rebecca Wisocky is fantastic as Hetty Woodstone, Isaac’s best friend and, get this, Sam’s many-times-great-aunt! They’re both part of the original ghostly crew at Woodstone Mansion, and they really add to the show’s charm.
The property also holds the spirits of those who died much earlier. Devan Chandler Long plays Thorfinn, a Viking who ended up in America and passed away in 1009 on the land where Woodstone now stands. Roman Zaragoza portrays Sassappis, often called “Sass,” a Lenape spirit and one of the oldest ghosts haunting the property, who died in the 1500s.
Among the resident ghosts is Alberta Haynes, who also goes by Esther Greene. She’s a jazz singer and former ventriloquist from the 1920s, portrayed by Danielle Pinnock. After a long wait, Alberta is now in a relationship with another ghost, a scout troop leader played by Richie Moriarty, who passed away on the grounds of Woodstone in the 1980s.
Alongside Hetty, Sheila Carrasco plays Flower, a ghost from the 1960s who always seems a little out of it. Flower was a carefree hippie who tragically died after a bear attack, and she’s been in a relationship with Thor for a while now. Rounding out the main group of ghosts is Trevor Lefkowitz, a 1990s businessman who unexpectedly died at Woodstone—and without his pants!
I’ve been really getting into the characters on this show! It’s fascinating to see how everyone interacts. John Hartman is amazing as Nigel Chessum, a soldier from the Revolutionary War who used to be involved with Isaac. And it’s great to see Caroline Aaron as Carol, Pete’s ex-wife and another one of Isaac’s past loves. Matt Walsh is fantastic too, playing Hetty Woodstone’s really sneaky husband, Elias. They all add so much to the story!
Mary Holland plays Patience, a critical and strict character in Ghosts. She first appeared in Season 4, rising from the ground seeking revenge on Isaac Higgintoot. Punam Patel stars as Bella, who was introduced as Jay’s sister and has become an important character throughout the series.
When Does Ghosts Season 6 Premiere?
I’m so excited to hear that Ghosts is coming back for a sixth season! CBS has announced it’ll be part of their fall 2026-2027 schedule, right after Season 5 finishes up next spring. If they follow their usual pattern, we can probably expect the new season to start around mid-October. Fingers crossed for a premiere date of October 16, 2025 – I’m already marking my calendar!
The show will likely continue to air for half an hour at 8:30 pm Eastern on Thursdays. It’s scheduled between two other popular CBS programs: the comedy Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and the legal drama Matlock. CBS has renewed all three shows, so they’re all expected to return this fall.
