Instead of traditionally viewing August as a time for discarding less successful films and unused TV pilots, Netflix has broken away from this practice. Nowadays, they don’t consider August as a month for getting rid of outdated content; instead, they treat it just like any other month in their innovative approach to the entertainment industry.
Indeed, Netflix is planning to debut what appears to be its most popular show at the moment in August – a revamp of The Addams Family titled “Wednesday” starring Jenna Ortega as the main character. In August, we can also expect the first installment of Season 2 for “Wednesday,” along with a new animated series from BoJack Horseman’s creator, a documentary unveiling the truth behind The Biggest Loser reality TV show, an adult-rated animated comedy called Fixed by Genndy Tartakovsky, and the movie adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club based on the bestselling book series.
Here’s everything coming to Netflix in August 2025…

The Worst Netflix Blockbusters
10. Spenser Confidential
In collaboration once more, director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg produced this crime thriller, modeled after the Robert B. Parker detective series. Similar to many Netflix productions, the ensemble cast is impressive – Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Bokeem Woodbine, Marc Maron, among others. However, the storyline appears to be in its early stages of development. Wahlberg’s character is a former cop who investigates a string of murders linked to his past imprisonment. To be honest, the plot beyond this point doesn’t seem significant. It primarily serves as a platform for generic action scenes and unmemorable witty exchanges between Wahlberg and Duke. The overall production feels like it was designed for background viewing during household chores – a fitting choice considering Netflix’s primary audience.
9. Project Power
Netflix’s endeavors to venture into the comic-book industry without possessing the rights to well-known superhero characters have led to some lackluster films, one example being “Project Power“. This movie features a star-studded cast including Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback, who grapple with a somewhat mediocre concept: a drug that grants ordinary individuals superpowers. The twist is that the user doesn’t know which power they will receive until they take the drug, but in “Project Power“, characters seem to always get the exact power they need at the right moment, such as when Gordon-Levitt’s character becomes bulletproof just before raiding a drug dealer’s compound. The film portrays the drug as dangerous, yet consistently showcases its exciting effects, turning people into fire-breathing creatures or colossal beasts. Is this film meant to serve as a warning or an escape from reality?
8. The Cloverfield Paradox
In a way, one could argue that Netflix isn’t entirely at fault for acquiring this film; they purchased it from Paramount after it had already been produced. This third Cloverfield installment, which is arguably less crucial to the series, follows a group of scientists who are accidentally transported to a parallel universe due to a mishap with a clean energy experiment. Paramount consistently postponed the film’s release, until Netflix eventually picked it up and unveiled it unexpectedly during the Super Bowl in 2018. This surprise strategy undoubtedly attracted a significant amount of viewers to Netflix… for a movie that wasn’t quite good enough to secure a traditional theater release. Whoops!
7. Thunder Force
Melissa McCarthy, who can be brilliant in suitable roles, frequently finds herself stuck in less humorous films. Despite her talents, she often has to improvise within poor scripts. For example, take the movie “Thunder Force,” another uninspired superhero film on Netflix. In this production, McCarthy and Octavia Spencer gain powers to fight villains. While the idea could potentially work, the execution is lacking as there are hardly any jokes; instead, it’s just constant improvisation by the stars. They both deserve more appealing projects with well-written humor.
6. Outside the Wire
A common trait found in numerous Netflix B-movies is an overarching atmosphere of gloomy, pompous sadness. For instance, the film “Outside the Wire” showcases a duo of soldiers (Anthony Mackie and Damson Idris) battling against a terrorist seeking a nuclear weapon amidst a brutal futuristic conflict. The movie’s production design is commendable, particularly in depicting sleek future robots. However, if viewers are looking for movies to be entertaining and enjoyable, “Outside the Wire” along with many others in this category seem to disappoint in that aspect.
5. Heart of Stone
In a clever twist on the action genre, “Heart of Stone” initially presents a captivating premise: a secret agent masquerading as an unassuming computer expert within a team of spies, only for them to discover he’s none other than James Bond. However, the execution falls short, and the film would have benefited from casting an actor who embodies a nerdy, underestimated persona before transforming into a formidable action hero. Instead, Netflix opted for Gal Gadot, a renowned superhero in real life. Unfortunately, after 40 minutes, the narrative veers away from the intriguing premise and transitions into a more conventional action-thriller, with Gadot pursuing rival agents seeking to acquire “The Heart,” a quantum computer capable of predicting the future. This seemingly powerful technology is portrayed not as an ominous threat but rather as a beneficial force that should be kept from the wrong hands. Kudos to Netflix for their creative idea, even if the execution could have been better!
4. Bright
Netflix invested significantly in resources, both financially and through marketing efforts, for the film “Bright,” one of their early endeavors to create a blockbuster-worthy movie for home viewing audiences. They allocated approximately $100 million for this project, hired David Ayer, who had previously directed “Suicide Squad,” worked from a script written by Max Landis at his peak of influence and popularity, and attracted Will Smith and Joel Edgerton to star in a cop buddy movie about a human (Smith) and his orc (Edgerton) partner. This was set in a world where humans and mythical creatures coexist, potentially hinting at a racial allegory that could have added depth if the film tackled it. Unfortunately, “Bright” turned out to be Netflix’s biggest flop up until that point; a huge squandering of time, money, and effort. They even produced a “Bright” Yule Log for promotional purposes, though it no longer seems to be accessible on Netflix. Merry Christmas, I suppose.
3. Mute
Duncan Jones, known for directing movies like “Moon” and “Source Code,” taking on a reimagining of “Blade Runner” seems promising. However, unfortunately, the final product did not meet its expectations. Although it shares the bleak dystopian setting with “Blade Runner,” the themes were quite different. The protagonist is a mute Amish character? And Alexander Skarsgaard portrays a silent tech-noir hero, battling against… Paul Rudd, sporting an oversized mustache? Moreover, the plot revolves around disturbing elements of child abuse? None of these elements align with or make sense in relation to “Mute.
2. Red Notice
Dwayne Johnson, one of the stars of Red Notice, boasted that this globe-trotting heist film represented Netflix’s biggest investment in any movie to date. However, upon viewing the completed product, it became clear that money can’t always buy what’s truly valuable in cinema – a compelling reason to empathize with the characters. In this instance, the three main characters, played by Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, were at times bland and even somewhat irritating.
While it is undeniably enjoyable to watch attractive individuals traverse the world, particularly since Netflix allows you to enjoy stunning landscapes without leaving home, it would have been nice if Red Notice had more substance beyond this. Regrettably, it seems that the film offers little more than the minimum level of entertainment it promises. Despite being Netflix’s most significant investment in a movie, viewers ultimately received exactly what they paid for.
1. The Ridiculous 6
Adam Sandler was one of the early Hollywood A-listers to join forces with Netflix, and their initial collaboration resulted in the film “The Ridiculous 6“, which was a comedic take on classic Western films like “The Magnificent Seven.“. The story revolves around a group of cowboys (Sandler, Terry Crews, Rob Schneider, Jorge Garcia, Luke Wilson, and Taylor Lautner) who discover they are brothers, all fathered by the same outlaw (Nick Nolte). Netflix blockbusters often boast impressive casts, and this one is no exception, featuring stars like Will Forte, Steve Zahn, Danny Trejo, Jon Lovitz, Harvey Keitel, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Chris Parnell, John Turturro, Chris Kattan, and the late Norm Macdonald. Unfortunately, the movie’s script wasn’t as well-cooked as its cast, leaving these talented individuals with little to work with. “The Ridiculous 6” received a unique 0 score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn’t seem to matter as Netflix proudly announced that it had been watched more in its first month than any other film they had ever released. So while critics may not have found it funny, it appears someone involved with the production certainly did!
