In April on Disney+, we bid farewell to one show and welcome a new one. The initial weeks of the month are marked by the final three episodes of the series Daredevil: Born Again. Once Marvel’s latest MCU series concludes, it’s time for the Star Wars universe to take center stage, with the debut of Andor Season 2.
Amongst and surrounding those two headlines, you’ll find a fresh David Blaine series, the resumption of Doctor Who for a second season on Disney+, and a new documentary titled “The Untold Story of A Goofy Movie.” This captivating production offers intriguing interviews from key figures and rare footage, unveiling the movie’s influence and enduring appeal as a cherished classic for many. Impressive, isn’t it?

Great Disney+ Movies You Might Have Missed
The Three Caballeros (1944)
Oklahoma! (1955)
Although Disney has been around for a while and even obtained the film library from 20th Century Fox, there aren’t many old titles available on Disney+ apart from their beloved animated films and numerous live-action comedies that are easily forgotten. However, one exception is “Oklahoma!”, the 1955 movie version of Rogers and Hammerstein’s acclaimed Broadway musical. Apart from timeless tunes like “Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'” and a remarkable cast, this film showcases some of the earliest uses of 70mm widescreen photography. This grand visual scope fittingly mirrors the film’s frontier setting.
Rookie of the Year (1993)
Despite many 90’s childhood classics losing their charm, “Rookie of the Year” remains engaging for kids. This is evident in my own children’s enthusiasm, who, despite knowing little about baseball, are captivated by this comedy. The story revolves around a 12-year-old boy (Thomas Ian Nicholas) who, in a strange accident, breaks his shoulder and later finds out that he can now throw as fast as a professional baseball player once it heals. His newfound talent catches the attention of his beloved Chicago Cubs, helping them transform from hapless underdogs to surprising champions. While it follows sports movie conventions, it does so in a way that’s funny and cleverly cast, with an unexpected choice like Gary Busey playing the rugged romantic lead.
George of the Jungle (1997)
If you’re a fan of slapstick comedy or if you’ve got kids who are, give “George of the Jungle” a go. This delightfully silly remake of the classic cartoon show is a sweet and fun watch. Brendan Fraser shines as George, a jungle-raised man surrounded by an intelligent animal crew, embodying boyish charm and physical comedy at its finest (not to mention his impressive physique). Fraser was one of the few ’90s stars whose humor was as well-defined as his abs, and “George of the Jungle” capitalizes on both.
Sky High (2005)
Before Disney acquired Marvel, they attempted to establish their own comic-book universe through “Sky High,” a concept reminiscent of both “X-Men” and “Harry Potter.” It revolves around a high school for aspiring superhumans, where students are categorized as heroes (similar to jocks) or sidekicks (similar to nerds). In “Sky High,” the smart allegory is reinforced by its warm-hearted narrative and an engaging ensemble of adult characters, featuring Kurt Russell, Lynda Carter, Cloris Leachman, and Bruce Campbell. Despite not earning enough to warrant a sequel, “Sky High” holds its ground against any of the popular Marvel movies available on Disney+.
Dan in Real Life (2007)
It’s true that my fondness for this movie might stem from the fact that it takes place in Rhode Island, where much of my family resides. However, the majority of my appreciation is due to its poignant portrayal of a widower (played subtly by Steve Carell) who encounters a potential new love interest. The complication? She’s dating his brother (Dane Cook). Despite the straightforward plotline, the movie demonstrates a deep understanding and compassion for its characters, avoiding heavy-handed emotional manipulation. This film isn’t suitable for all audiences – it might be too slow for younger viewers – but if you’re looking to make the most of your streaming subscription when the kids aren’t around, give Dan in Real Life a chance.
Walt & El Grupo (2008)
If you’re curious about the background of Disney’s creation of movies like “The Three Caballeros” and “Saludos Amigos”, I recommend watching the documentary titled “Walt & El Grupo”. This film narrates a Latin American journey taken by Walt Disney and his creative team (known as “El Grupo”) in the early 1940s, as part of a goodwill tour sponsored by President Roosevelt. Regardless of your feelings towards Disney, their impact on popular culture over the past century is immense. A film like “Walt & El Grupo” provides a valuable insight into how Disney expanded its global influence. The documentary also features captivating archival footage from Walt’s trip and reveals the inspiration behind “Saludos Amigos” and “The Three Caballeros”.
Jordan Rides the Bus (2010)
In 2009, ESPN initiated a collection of 30 documentaries, each telling tales from the first 30 years of their sports network. This project, named “30 For 30,” was so successful that it continued even after ESPN surpassed its 30th anniversary, and now numerous engaging sports documentaries from this series can be found on Disney+. Among these are “I Hate Christian Laettner” about the renowned college basketball player, “Kings Ransom” detailing Wayne Gretzky’s significant move from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings, and “Bad Boys,” focusing on the Detroit Pistons teams of the 1980s and ’90s.
To begin your exploration, consider “Jordan Rides the Bus,” a documentary that delves into Michael Jordan’s ambitious endeavor to switch from basketball to football. Directed by Ron Shelton, who is known for iconic sports films such as “Bull Durham” and “White Men Can Jump,” this documentary benefits from a filmmaker’s perspective and a sports enthusiast’s insight, making it a fascinating watch.
Cars 3 (2017)
You might think twice before revisiting the Cars franchise, especially after its somber second installment. However, if you overlooked Cars 3, you missed what many consider the best film in the series. The main character, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), grapples with the approaching end of his racing career and the realization of his own mortality. It may seem unusual for a car to grapple with aging, but then again, everything in the Cars films is somewhat unusual; this one simply delves deeper into the oddities of its world with more thoughtfulness and creativity.
The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)
People often complain that there are no more original blockbusters, but when one does come out, they tend to overlook it. For instance, “The Kid Who Would Be King” was a clever modern take on Arthurian legends, boasting an impressive cast and a relevant political message, from the same director as “Attack the Block”, one of the most popular cult films this century. Unfortunately, it seems that not many people went to watch it in theaters. (To be honest, I didn’t either until I saw it on a plane and instantly fell for it.) All in all, “The Kid Who Would Be King” is a hidden gem that can be found in Disney+’s collection.
