On Wednesday, May 21st, the Instagram account of the “Wicked” movies launched a mysterious countdown. A title card displayed ominously, reading “Six months,” accompanied by a solitary foreboding piano chord. In six months, we’ll witness a film that was shot before the original movie even premiered. In six months, we can listen to newly composed songs. In six months, Cynthia Erivo will utter the word “Fiyero,” which has caused quite a stir in musical-theater schools nationwide. For now, fans of “Wicked” will have to make do with occasional updates, while we eagerly await the end of this long wait. Here’s what we currently know about “Wicked: For Good.

What happens in the next act of Wicked?

In essence, although the details are not yet confirmed, the upcoming Wicked movie is expected to feature Ariana Grande as originally planned. However, unlike the musical, it may deviate from the original story in certain aspects. For instance, after Elphaba’s escape, she might go into hiding, while Glinda marries Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey) and sings the popular song “Thank Goodness.” Yet, Fiyero continues to harbor feelings for Elphaba and searches for her, while Glinda collaborates with the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). To retaliate against Elphaba, Madame Morrible (played by Michelle Yeoh) suggests creating a powerful tornado. The story then progresses through well-known numbers such as “As Long As You’re Mine,” “No Good Deed,” and the duet between Glinda and Elphaba titled “For Good.

The narrative in the upcoming film “For Good” shares similarities with the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz” featuring Judy Garland, but it’s not clear how Dorothy will be depicted. Director Jon M. Chu has hinted that she is more involved, stating in a 2024 interview with Variety that “Dorothy is present within the show and they must intersect.” However, he hasn’t confirmed whether she will appear as a character in the second film or if audiences will interpret her role for themselves. He leaves this revelation for “Part Two”.

There’s no official trailer or soundtrack out yet, but we do have the latest poster dated May 14. In this image, Glinda and Elphaba are depicted standing on separate cliffs, with the iconic yellow brick road connecting them. The caption reads, “You will be changed.

Will there be any new music?

Absolutely! In the anticipated sequel Wicked: For Good, composer Stephen Schwartz has revealed that two completely new songs will be introduced. According to Schwartz, these new tracks stand alone as complete songs and there are also new sections in existing songs in both movies. All the fresh material is designed to enhance the storytelling experience. Erivo shared with Variety that she worked on Elphaba’s new song, which reportedly moved the entire film crew to tears during filming. “I hope audiences are prepared — it’s a song that delves into the core of who Elphaba is,” said Erivo. The other new song will feature Glinda and Grande shared with Variety that this number reveals an unexplored aspect of her character. “In the stage production, this transformation occurs offstage. However, in the movie, we get to witness her making a decision that shapes who she becomes. It’s an honor to sing this song and be the first Glinda to bring it to life,” said Grande.

And when’s the release date?

The musical “For Good: Wicked” is scheduled to premiere before Thanksgiving weekend, specifically on November 21, 2025. It’s something we can all look forward to, indeed a blessing in disguise.
