Since Nintendo unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 in April, we’ve been inundated with a variety of physical and digital games planned for the console. For physical games, it seems that most releases will utilize Nintendo’s new Game Key Card physical format. Several publishers are opting for complete physical releases of their games, which is great news for those who prefer owning RPGs in a tangible form. In light of this, I’ve compiled a list of the RPGs that will be available as full physical releases. For most of the games below, there may be minor updates like with any modern title, but the publishers have assured us that the games can be played fully from the cartridge.
RPGs on Nintendo Switch 2 available as complete physical releases on cartridge
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma marks the debut for Nintendo Switch 2, coming as a special Nintendo Switch 2 Edition that bundles the base game and the Upgrade Pack. Unlike digital releases on other platforms, the physical version for Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $10 more, but it offers a complete cartridge experience with a 64GB Switch 2-specific cartridge. Check out our interview and preview of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma here.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
CD Projekt Red has announced that the “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition” will come as a single game card, including both the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion. Historically, CD Projekt Red is known for providing extra items like manuals, posters, or maps with their physical releases. The contents of the “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition” for Nintendo Switch are yet to be disclosed. Currently, this is the only upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch 2 that will ship on a complete cartridge. Following “The Witcher 3” on Switch, it’s reassuring to see CD Projekt Red continue their tradition of delivering complete physical copies.
Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Grand Bazaar will come with a full game on the cartridge, unlike some games which only include a download code or Game Key Card in the box. Additionally, t Grand Bazaar here and here.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition*
Regrettably, Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch 2 won’t come with the DLC content; however, it does include the game itself and an Upgrade Pack on cartridge. If you already don’t have the DLC on your Nintendo Switch or wish to purchase everything, you’ll need to buy the DLC separately at additional cost. It’s worth noting that a physical release in Japan for Breath of the Wild did include the DLC pack, but unfortunately, this new retail edition for Nintendo Switch 2 will not be offering the same bundle. For those who haven’t played Breath of the Wild yet and are interested in getting the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with the DLC, you’ll need to pay around $90.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition*
In a similar fashion to Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be available on a physical cartridge at a $10 higher price compared to the standard Nintendo Switch version. The new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers both the base game for Nintendo Switch and an Upgrade Pack. This Upgrade Pack encompasses enhancements such as Zelda notes, HDR support, improved resolution, frame rates, and additional features for both Zelda games.
What is a Game Key Card for Nintendo Switch 2?
Essentially, a Nintendo Switch 2 Game Key Card functions like a pre-loaded cartridge with the game license or key. Instead of using a code, you insert this card into your Nintendo Switch 2, which then downloads the complete game as an update from the internet directly onto the system. Since these games lack built-in data, they cannot be played without first downloading the necessary game files from the internet.
As a passionate gamer, I want to share an exciting piece of information about Game Key Cards – they don’t bind to your account, giving you the freedom to resell, trade, or even gift them to friends! Plus, these cards often hit the shelves at retail for less than digital purchases. That’s why Sega is opting for Game Key Card releases instead of full physical ones for the Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut and Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army. So, grab your keys and let’s dive into these fantastic games!
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition physical release for Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo has a specific webpage detailing the games included with the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Editions, which consist of both the Nintendo Switch game and an Upgrade Pack. The features for each Upgrade Pack differ based on the particular game, but some confirmed ones include Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road, and several Nintendo-developed titles. Keep in mind that owning an upgrade path to a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not guarantee a physical release for the game; ensure you obtain accurate information if you prefer owning a tangible copy rather than just a code or Game Key Card.
I’ll make sure to update this feature as soon as we receive confirmation about any upcoming Role-Playing Game (RPG) being shipped on a complete game cartridge.
