As a die-hard fan of country music, I’ve been captivated by the talented artists gracing the screens of Yellowstone, each with their unique charm and melodious tunes. The show has not only given us gripping drama but also introduced us to some of the most celebrated names in the genre.
In the world of Yellowstone’s cast, you might encounter both renowned country musicians and genuine cowboys just as frequently.
The Yellowstone soundtrack greatly contributes to making Taylor Sheridan’s ranch-set drama as authentic as possible. Moreover, several actors who are part of the cast also portray roles on-screen, ranging from Duttons to ranch workers.
In various genres, you’ll encounter up-and-coming artists like Luke Grimes as well as timeless icons such as Tim McGraw, all standing together on the music scene.
For a full breakdown of every country star who plays a role in Yellowstone (big and small), read on.
Kevin Costner
Tunes of Yellowstone: ‘The Slayer’, ‘Pearly Gates’, ‘Gloomy Rides’, ‘We Stand Our Ground’, ‘It Catches You Unawares’
Plays: John Dutton
If you thought Kevin Costner was simply a proprietor of Western movies, think again. He’s actually the lead of a group called Kevin Costner & Modern West, a country-rock band that has multiple songs featured in the show’s soundtrack. But Costner (until now) was also the head honcho of the Dutton ranch, playing the family patriarch and cattle tycoon John Dutton.
John rarely touches a guitar to strum a melody, but Kevin Costner has been involved with country music since 2008 but don’t expect him in Season 5 Part 2. However, let’s keep our fingers crossed for another song from him in the upcoming soundtrack.
Luke Grimes
Songs in Yellowstone: ‘No Horse to Ride’
Plays: Kayce Dutton
In a natural and easy-to-read manner, the statement could be rephrased as follows: Luke Grimes portrays Kayce Dutton, the handsome son with soulful eyes, who debuted his self-titled album in 2024. One of his songs, “No Horse to Ride,” was featured in Season 5 Part 1.
Although Grimes hasn’t launched any new music yet, he hinted that there will be more to come. In his own words in 2024 [via Holler]: “I’ve been working on a movie and a TV series this year, so it’s been quite busy. Now the tour is approaching. It’s all about finding the time.
I believe the new music isn’t too distant. I anticipate returning to the studio at the start of next year, and if things go smoothly, you might hear it quite soon. I don’t foresee a significant wait.
Ryan Bingham
As a music enthusiast, let me share my take on the Yellowstone soundtrack:
Plays: Walker
Among all characters, Ryan Bingham’s songs are most frequently included in the show’s soundtrack, largely because his character, Walker, is a guitar-playing singer who isn’t shy about performing songs in the bunkhouse whenever the mood strikes him.
In a passionate fan’s perspective, my admiration for the raw emotion in Walker’s music is unwavering, even though it sometimes faces an icy reception. Take, for example, the explosive moment in Season 4 Episode 7 when he shattered his beloved guitar in a fit of anger. Yet, amidst the chaos, there was a glimmer of hope – an older ranch hand bartered one of his cherished belt buckles to replace Walker’s damaged instrument.
Lainey Wilson
Titles for Songs from Yellowstone:
Plays: Abby
In my opinion, being a devoted admirer of country music, I can’t help but appreciate the shrewd decision made by Taylor Sheridan in casting Lainey Wilson as the character Abby on the show. It was a brilliant move that has certainly added a unique and captivating element to the series.
In the upcoming season part 2, Abby, who was employed for a performance at the Dutton ranch, attracted the attention of the charming cowhand Ryan. Despite their limited interaction in Season 5 Part 2 (as Ryan was headed to Texas), an open audition hints that she will return.
Prior to her on-screen appearance, Wilson’s music also featured in the soundtrack.
Tim McGraw
Songs in Yellowstone: ‘The Cowboy In Me’
Plays: James Dutton (1883)
Stepping back in time to the Yellowstone prequel 1883, noted country legend Tim McGraw played James Dutton. He was the first Dutton to break ground on what we now know to be the Yellowstone ranch, but he only got there through literal blood, sweat, and tears.
Keen-eyed viewers will recall that he makes an appearance in flashbacks throughout the show’s main storyline, while astute listeners would have picked up on his song ‘The Cowboy In Me’ in Season 4, Episode 7. McGraw has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the highest-selling artists ever and undoubtedly the most well-known country singer among Yellowstone’s musical talents.
Faith Hill
Songs in Yellowstone: None
Plays: Margaret Dutton (1883)
In actuality, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are a real-life couple, making them an ideal choice for portraying Margaret and James Dutton. Throughout their journey from Texas to Montana in 1883, Margaret faces the challenge of safeguarding her children and maintaining order within the family. Despite these struggles, her strong determination and self-awareness serve as pillars that help keep the family united.
Despite not appearing on the Yellowstone soundtrack, Faith Hill is undeniably one of the most accomplished country musicians, having sold nearly 50 million albums. Her hit single ‘This Kiss’ is likely familiar to many, featuring the captivating lines: “It’s centrifugal force, it’s pure, unending happiness.
I can’t wait to keep my gaze sharp for even more talented country singers popping up in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, dropping on November 10th!
