The sci-fi film Project Hail Mary has been a huge success with both critics and audiences – here’s a look at all the box office records it’s shattered.
In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays a scientist who wakes up in space with no memory of his mission. The film follows his journey to make first contact with an alien life form and ultimately save Earth, breaking the typical Hollywood mold with its unique space adventure.
The movie, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, has earned a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
We gave the movie a full 5-star rating and called it a remarkable blend of sci-fi, action, adventure, humor, sadness, and intense drama in our review of Project Hail Mary. That strong story has also led to significant success at the box office.
Project Hail Mary already the biggest movie of 2026

Project Hail Mary earned $80.5 million domestically (in the US and Canada) and $60.4 million internationally, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $140.9 million.
The film’s opening weekend earnings were much higher than initially expected. In February, Deadline predicted a domestic debut of $45 to $55 million, while Variety, closer to the release date, estimated between $63 and $65 million. The actual results surpassed even those optimistic forecasts.
This film had the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, earning more than the $97.2 million worldwide debut of Scream 7.
That’s also the biggest debut for an Amazon/MGM movie, ahead of Creed III’s 100.4 million.
This film is the fourth movie released since the pandemic began that isn’t part of an existing series or franchise to earn over $50 million internationally, following Oppenheimer, F1: The Movie, and Superman.
Like Oppenheimer, Project Hail Mary is just the second movie in the last ten years that isn’t part of an existing series or franchise to earn over $80 million in its opening weekend in the US.
Ryan Gosling film on course to break even

According to Kevin Wilson, Amazon’s head of distribution, the film’s success is built on Andy Weir’s popular novel. He praised director duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for creating a visually impressive and emotionally engaging film, starring Ryan Gosling, that is best enjoyed with an audience on a large screen.
When a film receives both great reviews and enthusiastic reactions from audiences, it achieves something special. This clearly demonstrates that Ryan Gosling is a uniquely talented and charismatic actor with the broad appeal needed to lead a film like this.
I’m really hoping Project Hail Mary does well! From what I understand, it needs to make over $500 million just to cover its costs, since the movie reportedly cost around $200 million to make. Fingers crossed it reaches that goal!
Drew Goddard, who also wrote The Martian (based on Andy Weir’s novel), saw that film open with $54 million in the US and eventually earn $630 million worldwide, suggesting this new project has promising potential.
