For years, whispers of a possible remake for Final Fantasy IX have circulated online. However, any queries about it were consistently dismissed by Square Enix officials. Yet, as the 25th anniversary of this legendary ninth installment draws near, the company seems to be subtly suggesting that something could indeed be in the works.
The article posted on X site leaves no room for ambiguity. It features a quote from Final Fantasy IX, attributed to Vivi and addressed to Zidane: “My memories will become part of the sky.” With the game celebrating its 25th anniversary on July 7th, I’ve decided not to reveal what this quote might symbolize. As the Square Enix post succinctly states: “Those who understand, understand.” The use of a weeping emoticon beside this statement adds an extra layer of meaning to it.
A glance at the comments below this post suggests that the fans are interpreting it as a hint, possibly indicating that the 25th anniversary celebrations will feature a remake of Final Fantasy IX, or at least an announcement about it.
A week ago, Square Enix launched a website commemorating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX. The festivities begin on the game’s birthday, which is July 7, but you can already pre-order related merchandise: glasses, a vinyl record, or a book detailing Vivi’s past (releasing on July 2).
Is it possible that the highly anticipated remake of Final Fantasy IX was supposed to be unveiled on that particular day? Or perhaps the announcement might occur ahead of schedule, such as on June 6th during Summer Game Fest 2025? It seems rather improbable that they would launch Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 and Final Fantasy IX at the same time – it is more likely that Square Enix will debut Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 first (perhaps not until 2028).
It’s worth noting that the seventh game was distributed over three CDs on PlayStation, while the ninth was spread across four. This suggests that a remake of the ninth could potentially expand into a tetralogy. Regardless, if it’s as popular as Final Fantasy VII, there’s no doubt it would draw in a large number of players. After all, both the original and the upgraded versions have collectively sold 8.9 million copies.
