Evangelion Scores Major New Box Office Win With Penultimate Movie Release

The film has continued to perform well at the box office as special anniversary screenings play out. The re-release of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo has attracted large audiences, building excitement for the franchise’s final theatrical release this winter.

According to reports, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo returned to Japanese theaters on January 9th as part of a larger revival project planned for 2025-2026. During its opening weekend, the film brought in about 98.5 million yen (approximately US$620,000) and drew over 61,000 viewers. Even though it was only shown in 89 theaters across the country, it landed at number six in Japan’s box office rankings for January 9th-11th.

Evangelion Anime Continues Strong Theater Series Run Ahead of 30th Anniversary Reveal

Fans in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka enjoyed special screenings where they were encouraged to cheer and react to the movie. Throughout the event, people applauded for characters like Shinji and Kaworu. The enthusiastic crowds continue a trend of success for the re-released Evangelion films, which have been back in theaters for several months.

Released in 2012, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is the third movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Picking up years after Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, the film shows a changed world following a major event. It explores the conflict between two organizations, NERV and WILLE, and brings back Shinji Ikari after he’s been missing for a long time, setting up the events that continue in the next installment.

I noticed that Evangelion: 3.0 is getting another run in theaters, and it’s happening right before the final Evangelion movie, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, comes back too. They’re showing the updated version, 3.0+1.01, from February 13th to 19th, 2026. Thrice Upon a Time originally came out in 2021, and it’s meant to be the last film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, marking the end of Hideaki Anno’s work with the franchise.

Starting in October 2025 and continuing through February 2026, a special monthly screening series will showcase one Evangelion movie each month, with two films shown in October. Previous screenings included Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, and Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, all of which were popular during their initial limited releases. Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is the second-to-last film in the series.

The current campaign will build up to a special festival celebrating the 30th anniversary of Evangelion. This three-day event, taking place in February 2026 at Yokohama Arena, will feature exclusive announcements and be overseen by the original creators of the series.

People outside of Japan can stream the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
