Euphoria Season 3 Is Finally Happening

As a long-time fan of Euphoria, I’ve been through quite the rollercoaster ride with this show. The anticipation for its third season has felt like an eternity, and I’ve grown accustomed to the constant twists and turns in the production process. But finally, some promising updates have emerged!

Has “The Idol” on HBO caused an indefinite break for Sam Levinson’s original hit series, or is a third season on the way? Is there a specific reason for the delay, and do we have any indication of when filming might begin? After years of speculation, HBO officially announced on July 12 that season three is in production. Colman Domingo has also confirmed his return to the show. Blame The Idol

May 28, 2023: The mystery of whether Zendaya will face repercussions for misplacing a bag of drugs in “Euphoria” remains unresolved. HBO’s drama head, Francesca Orsi, shared during an interview with “State of the HBO Drama” that the production of the show is currently on hold. With Zendaya’s busy film schedule and Hollywood’s summer of strikes, “Euphoria” is at a standstill. Orsi stated, “We haven’t begun writing new scripts for ‘Euphoria.’ We were working on it concurrently with post-production on ‘Idol,’ but now we don’t have countless scripts.” If the show cannot meet its deadlines due to these obstacles, HBO may reconsider their plans. Orsi expressed hopefulness that they can come to an agreement sooner rather than later. However, if not, they will need to reassess their schedule for 2025 and determine which shows will be delivered then.

Don’t ask HBO for a release date

March 25, 2024: According to HBO’s firm declaration, “Euphoria” season three is on the way. However, as reported by “Variety,” the show’s stars are engaged with separate projects, and the storylines apparently need adjustments due to a time leap. Setting a production start date seems like a distant dream in Sam Levinson’s mind. Despite these complications, HBO’s assertion that the season is not being cancelled should be taken seriously. An HBO representative assured “Variety” that both HBO and Sam Levinson remain dedicated to producing a high-quality third season and are currently permitting the in-demand cast to work on other projects in the meantime.

Production is a no-go, for now

March 28, 2024: Information is surfacing about why Euphoria season three appears uncertain in HBO’s programming plans. According to a Variety article, the final installment of the provocative teen drama was hindered by extensive rewrites prior to HBO’s official announcement of the delay earlier this week. The initial script for season three, which cleared HBO’s approval before last year’s writers’ strike, did not satisfy Zendaya, the show’s lead actor and executive producer, who provided “significant input” to creator Sam Levinson. When the strikes ended and Levinson revised his original draft, taking into account the sudden demise of actor Angus Cloud, HBO swiftly rejected it. That version portrayed Rue maturing into a private detective. Zendaya suggested an alternative where Rue stays clean and becomes a surrogate mother, but that proposal was also dismissed, along with other ideas, such as a movie conclusion or series finale special.

The network pondered over the possibility of swapping out Levinson due to creative conflicts. Nevertheless, HBO aims to finalize an enhanced script version by October 1, with plans to start filming in 2025. Here’s hoping that “Euphoria” provides some closure when it potentially returns next year. The previous season ended with Rue indebted to the kingpins for several thousand dollars without addressing this significant storyline. Perhaps Lexi could pen a play to bring resolution.

Time jump is confirmed, though

June 11, 2024: Sam Levinson is against having adult actors portray teenagers in “Euphoria” any longer. It’s understandable given the circumstances. According to Variety, HBO’s Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of content, confirmed that the show has moved on from high school. “Sam is working on it,” Bloys shared. There have been numerous discussions regarding this matter. One concern for Levinson is transitioning the series beyond the high school setting. HBO hasn’t yet decided on a definitive answer to this question. “There are ongoing conversations about where to set it and how far in the future to set it,” Bloys explained. “However, Sam has an idea he’s enthusiastic about and is presently writing.” The primary cast will stay consistent, Bloys assured.

During this time, the “Euphoria” cast members’ popularity soars, gracing magazine covers globally and drawing media attention towards their hit series. In an interview on June 11, Colman Domingo addressed the ongoing speculation. “Sam is my friend,” he shared with GQ. “I haven’t discussed this with him because there are many rumors circulating. I choose to focus on my own concerns until it directly impacts me.”

War is over

July 12, 2024: Against all obstacles, including scheduling conflicts, a prolonged Hollywood strike, and the challenges presented by Sam Levinson, Euphoria triumphed. HBO has verified to Variety that the teen drama will initiate its third season in January 2025, with all primary cast members set to resume their roles. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice-president of programming and head of drama series and films, expressed her excitement: “I am delighted that we can start producing ‘Euphoria’ in January. Our creative collaboration with Sam and this remarkable cast has been a joy, and we are eager to bring the new season to life for the audience.” This implies that production commences three years following the second season’s broadcast. A poetic turn of events.
