Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1 recap: Rue’s life takes a shocking turn

Season 3 of Euphoria kicked off with a dramatic and eventful first episode! Be warned: the following contains major spoilers.

It’s been over four years since Season 2 of Euphoria aired, so fans have been eagerly waiting for the new season.

Okay, so if you need a refresher, the Season 2 finale was intense. Lexi’s play really brought everything to a head – Nate finally broke things off with Cassie, and he even turned his dad in to the police! Plus, it totally destroyed the friendship between Cassie and Maddy. It was a lot to take in!

Fez was arrested after a shooting at his apartment, where Ashtray was killed. Meanwhile, Rue shares that she finished the school year sober, leaving things on a somewhat positive note.

What happens in Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1?

Okay, so Season 3, Episode 1 was a lot! It’s a time jump, and honestly, it’s tough seeing Rue slip back into old habits. We also find out what’s been going on with Fez – he’s in prison, which is awful. Maddy and Lexi are chasing their dreams in Hollywood, which is cool to see, but Cassie and Nate… their relationship is still a mess, and their wedding is coming up fast, so things are definitely tense! It’s a wild start to the season.

The episode kicks off with Rue talking, and it immediately hits you – she’s not doing great. She starts by saying a lot of people have been asking what she’s been up to since graduating, and her answer is pretty blunt: not much good stuff, honestly. It’s a really raw and honest way to start, and it instantly makes you worry about her.

The first episode mainly focuses on Rue, beginning with her running drugs for Laurie while somewhere in Chihuahua.

Her car got stuck on top of the border wall, but she managed to reach Texas. There, she was temporarily sheltered by a Christian family on their rural property.

Rue feels a connection with their faith and contentment, and this could significantly impact her journey.

Rue becomes a drug mule

The show explains how Rue started working for Laurie through a flashback. We see Rue working at a Smoke Shack when Laurie unexpectedly tells her she now has a debt of $43 million.

Laurie is willing to accept $100,000, and as Rue narrates, she reveals how she started carrying drugs for others.

The show features disturbing scenes in Mexico where Rue and Faye prepare condoms filled with fentanyl, coating them in lubricant before swallowing them.

The trip across the border was stressful, and they finally returned to Laurie’s house, where Rue revealed she’d made twelve similar trips in the past two years.

She’s earning extra money driving for Uber, and she actually gave Eli Roth a ride to a Batman premiere on Sunset Boulevard! Afterwards, she catches up with Lexi, who’s now working on a nighttime soap opera in Hollywood and seems even more judgmental than before.

Cassie tries to be TikTok famous

The story opens with Cassie trying to gain popularity on TikTok, initially by posting playful, suggestive photos of herself in a dog costume, and also exploring the possibility of making money through OnlyFans.

Despite living in a large, expensive house with her fiancé Nate, they seem to be struggling financially, likely due to issues with the construction company Nate inherited from his father.

Cassie is dreaming of a lavish wedding filled with flowers, but disagreements about the cost are causing problems in her relationship.

Unhappy Maddy, plus updates on Fez and Jules

I can’t believe Maddy’s landed a really impressive job! She’s working at a management agency now, and get this – they represent people like Dylan Reid, you know, that actor everyone’s obsessed with on TV! It’s a huge step for her.

Despite appearances, she’s actually struggling to make ends meet and spends most of her time working at a desk.

We find out Jules is now a ‘Sugar Baby,’ and Fez has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Rue finds god

Later in the episode, Rue talks to Ali about her recovery and the 12-step program. During their conversation, she shares that she’s recently become interested in religion and plans to read the Bible, believing everything it says is true.

Laurie asks Rue to deliver drugs to Alamo Brown, a strip club owner known for throwing wild parties. Brown is hosting a sex party at his large mansion with many of his employees in attendance.

As Rue begins to connect with Alamo, a girl tragically overdoses on the drugs Rue supplied, which were unknowingly mixed with fentanyl. This creates a difficult situation for Rue, and she starts expressing a desire for the same sense of peace and stability that Alamo has achieved in his life.

Alamo challenges her faith by saying, “Let’s see if God believes in you.” An apple is balanced on her head, and she’s told to remain still. Alamo then aims a gun at the apple from a distance and shoots it off her head.

The episode ends with a mighty relieved Rue becoming hysterical.
