ETS2 is 13 years old and has just set an all-time record on Steam

Despite being released 13 years ago, Euro Truck Simulator 2 is still more popular than ever, boosted by the release of successful downloadable content.

SCS Software continues to support its earlier simulation games, and a surprisingly large number of people still enjoy them. Just this past weekend, over 72,000 players were actively playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 on Steam at the same time – likely a record for the game.

We say ‘apparently’ because SteamDB’s data doesn’t go back before 2013 (the original Euro Truck Simulator 2 launched on the platform in October 2012). However, even a quick look at the available stats shows the game didn’t reach over 10,000 concurrent players until mid-2014. Therefore, it’s impossible for Euro Truck Simulator 2 to have ever had more than 70,000 players online at the same time before now. This is the first time the game has hit that peak.

Currently, Euro Truck Simulator 2 is the best-selling paid game on Steam. While the number of players has decreased since yesterday’s high, it remains among the top 50 most popular games on the platform.

The recent jump in popularity is easy to explain. On November 27th, two new additions came out: the major Nordic Horizons expansion, which completely updated the Scandinavian countries in the game, and a smaller downloadable pack called Forest Machinery. Players loved Nordic Horizons, and many think it’s the best expansion the game has ever seen.
