Ethereum, that grand experiment in decentralized tyranny, now prepares its “Glamsterdam” upgrade-a name as gaudy as the promises it dangles before the faithful.

This is the last phase before we work on hardening and then shipping the testnets. Glamsterdam, they say, will be Ethereum’s most significant upgrade since the Merge. Jayanthi, ever the optimist, declares it will “change a lot of assumptions about Ethereum and set us up for much more scaling in the future.” Scaling, that eternal promise, like the mirage of an oasis in a desert of inefficiency.

At the heart of this upgrade lies enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (EIP-7732), a feature designed to bring block building into the core protocol. A noble goal, perhaps, but one wonders if it will merely shift the power from one set of hands to another, leaving the common user as beholden as ever.

Block-level Access Lists (EIP-7928) are another jewel in Glamsterdam’s crown. Each block, they say, will foretell its needs, allowing clients to prepare in advance. A smarter network, indeed, though one must ask: smarter for whom? The gas pricing changes, too, promise to make heavy computing cheaper and data storage more expensive.
