Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Peter Weir and More to Deliver Venice Masterclasses

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for cinema history and a soft spot for timeless performances, I find myself utterly thrilled by this year’s Venice Film Festival lineup. The opportunity to immerse myself in masterclasses led by legends like Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Peter Weir, and Pupi Avati is nothing short of a dream come true.

Attendees at the Venice Film Festival can look forward to learning directly from renowned figures such as Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Peter Weir, among others, through their expert workshops.

I’m thrilled to share that this year at the festival, both myself (Weaver) and Weir are set to receive the Golden Lion for Career Achievement awards. As an Oscar-nominated actor, my work in the “Alien” and “Avatar” series is well recognized. On the other hand, Weir, who has retired, has garnered numerous accolades for his exceptional films such as “Dead Poets Society,” “The Truman Show,” and “Master and Commander.”

Ethan Hawke made a significant impact in the movie “Dead Poets Society,” which marked his breakthrough role. Subsequently, he appeared in Richard Linklater’s “Before” series and the film “Boyhood,” as well as Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed.” Additionally, director Pupi Avati, famous for steering Venice’s closing film “L’orto Americano” and known for his horror films like “The House With Laughing Windows” and “Zeder,” is scheduled to conduct a masterclass.

Three discussions are scheduled to occur, orchestrated by festival sponsor Cartier. These will feature the following participants: Nicola Piovani, an Oscar-winning composer known for his work on “Life Is Beautiful,” engaged in a dialogue with director and screenwriter Cristina Comencini; Claude Lelouch, this year’s recipient of the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award and director of out-of-competition film “Finalement,” conversing with the movie’s lead actress Barbara Pravi; and Richard Gere, fresh from his role in Paul Schrader’s “Oh Canada,” having a chat with Italian voice actor Mario Cordova.

Due to an increased number of attendees, the masterclasses and discussions will now take place at the Match Point Arena, found within the Tennis Club Venezia on the Lido.

The 81st Venice Film Festival runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7.
