The 2025 Esports World Cup has commenced in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, making it the second iteration since last year’s Esports World Championship (EWC). Known as the world’s biggest gaming and esports event, the EWC brings together 2000 players from the leading 200 global esports organizations, competing across 24 games. Each team is vying for a piece of the unprecedented $70 million prize fund, with the EWC Club Champion taking home a staggering $7 million.
The initial phase of the occasion was signified by the opening press conference, during which His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, Chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation, expressed his sentiments and shared some insights about the importance of the EWC, along with his own gaming background: “We feel incredibly honored to invite the world back to Riyadh for the Esports World Cup – a spectacle that highlights the magnitude, aspirations, and future potential of esports and gaming. This is a crucial juncture that will influence the trajectory of this industry for many years.
By organizing the Esports World Cup, we are showcasing our dedication towards constructing a forward-thinking, top-tier esports community that prioritizes sustainability. This initiative underscores our conviction in gaming as a means to foster connections, stimulate creativity, and generate opportunities, all while furthering our objectives outlined in Vision 2030 and the National Gaming and Esports Strategy. The world of esports has transcended its status as a niche pastime; it now stands as a global sport and cultural phenomenon. The Esports World Cup serves as its most powerful platform for unity. We are proud to spearhead this transformation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
To broaden the event’s reach and attract a larger global audience, the Esports World Cup Foundation plans to generate approximately 7,000 hours of live content, which will be available in 35 languages and broadcast across 140 countries through prominent international media platforms like FOX Sports (U.S.), DAZN, Eurosport, and NAVER. Furthermore, additional competition coverage will be streamed live on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok.
As a gaming enthusiast this year, I’m thrilled to see a fresh wave of titles entering the arena, such as VALORANT, Fatal Fury, and even good old Chess. Legendary figures like Magnus Carlsen and Cristiano Ronaldo have graciously stepped up as Global Ambassadors for our community. Interestingly, Carlsen will also take part in the first-ever EWC Chess Tournament happening from July 29–31. Can’t wait to see what these titans bring to the table!
Viewers will be able to witness the excitement of EWC spanning a wide range of game titles, including Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 & Warzone, Chess, Counter-Strike 2, Crossfire, Dota 2, EA FC 25, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Free Fire, Honor of Kings, League of Legends, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Overwatch 2, PUBG MOBILE & Battlegrounds, Rainbow Six Siege X, RENNSPORT, Rocket League, Starcraft 2, Street Fighter 6, Teamfight Tactics, Tekken 8, and VALORANT.
