Despite Zach Braff, who played Dr. John “JD” Dorian, being told years prior about his potential departure from the show, Scrubs still struggled to thrive without its leading man after he appeared in all nine seasons. The medical sitcom had plans to continue even after Braff’s exit, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out as intended when he was gradually phased out of the revamped Med School.
The principal character in “Scrubs” was modeled after a real individual, and the actual John Dorian (JD) provided advice on the medical aspects portrayed in the sitcom’s scripts. The talented ensemble cast that made up “Scrubs,” led by Braff, excelled in the show’s unique blend of humor and drama. However, it wasn’t just JD who narrated episodes; he was the primary storyteller throughout most of the series’ nine-season run. Despite the show’s belief that it could sustain itself without Braff as a regular cast member, things unraveled significantly in his absence.
Scrubs Was Very Much Not “Fine Without” Zach Braff
Med School happened due to Braff’s decision to leave and pursue other endeavors
Back in 2006, Zach Braff was a guest on a British talk show titled “Friday Night with Jonathan Ross“. During the interview, Jonathan Ross inquired about the success of the 2004 film “Garden State” and how Braff’s movie career had progressed beyond his role on “Scrubs“. When asked if he would consider leaving the sitcom to pursue more film opportunities, Braff responded by saying that the producers of “Scrubs” often told him they could manage without him.
During the Jonathan Ross interview, Zach Braff was in the midst of filming Season 6 of “Scrubs.” Due to the 2007 writers’ strike, the following Season 7 was abbreviated, and then an eighth and final season as we know it followed. It wasn’t until Season 9, Episode 6 titled “Our New Girl-Bro,” that the revamped series produced another episode without Braff, but he returned three episodes later for his last appearance. Interestingly, Episode 13, “Our Thanks,” turned out to be the last episode of “Scrubs.” Unfortunately, ABC did not order a Season 10 after “Med School” ended.
Braff’s Absence Wasn’t The Only Thing Wrong With Scrubs: Med School
Scrubs season 9 failed to recapture the original magic between the main cast
In essence, most of the original cast from “Scrubs” carried over to “Med School,” except for Zach Braff, Judy Reyes (Carla), and Neil Flynn (the Janitor). The creators, led by showrunner Bill Lawrence, introduced new interns as the main characters in the rebooted series, while the remaining original cast members took on lesser roles. Despite these efforts, the same magical dynamic among the revamped cast was never restored. Zach Braff’s absence from “Scrubs” might have contributed to this issue, although his return in season 9 wasn’t a significant improvement either.
The shift from Scrubs to Scrubs: Med School was a significant drop, not only due to Zach Braff leaving the sitcom, but also because JD’s storyline had reached a fulfilling conclusion in the “My Finale” two-parter. It would have been intriguing to observe how Scrubs: Med School managed its rotating cast of characters, but unfortunately, poor ratings didn’t allow for its prolongation.
The Scrubs Revival Will Finally Bring Back Zach Braff As JD
Disney has given Scrubs season 10 the green light
Zach Braff hasn’t formally taken on the character of JD since 2010, but there was a brief attempt at a small-scale (and unofficial) Scrubs comeback during the show’s rewatch podcast, which involved him and Donald Faison (Turk) reading AI-generated scripts. Fortunately, this isn’t the end of Braff reprising his role, as the Scrubs revival has been approved and is anticipated to feature most original cast members who are available.
Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, won’t take up the role of showrunner again but has promised his continued involvement with Season 10. He has hinted that the show will subtly echo the setting of Med School by introducing new characters, while also welcoming back familiar faces. It’s highly unlikely that JD won’t resume his usual position as the main storyteller. Regardless, it’s exciting to anticipate Scrubs’ return to our screens after the unsatisfying and inconclusive ending in Season 9.
