In James Gunn’s upcoming live-action DC Universe, where “Creature Commandos” has already laid the groundwork in animation, any dreams of Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising his role as Thomas Wayne are no more. This is quite disheartening, considering Zack Snyder’s intentions to bring the acclaimed “Flashpoint” storyline to life, with Morgan potentially playing Batman in a new costume. Just thinking about Morgan discussing this still stirs my emotions.

Morgan is actively publicizing AMC’s upcoming zombie series spinoff titled “The Walking Dead: Dead City“, with the second season set to air on TV schedules in early May of 2025. However, it wasn’t just Negan, his formidable anti-hero, that Morgan interviewed with co-star Lauren Cohan for Den Of Geek’s TikTok. When asked if they were cast as Thomas and Martha Wayne as a humorous reference to another series, JDM clarified that he hadn’t entered that universe yet. In his own words:

1. For the first time, we collaborated or crossed paths with each other. It’s worth mentioning that at some point, Zack had planned more movies, and under different circumstances, Flashpoint Batman might have given these characters a larger role. Regrettably, the opportunity for me to be part of this in Zack’s universe never materialized.

2. We hadn’t met or worked together before that instance. Notably, there was a phase where Flashpoint Batman could have expanded the roles of these characters in more films directed by Zack. Unfortunately, I missed out on being involved in this project within his world.

3. This was our inaugural encounter or professional team-up. There was an occasion when Flashpoint Batman might have featured these characters in a larger capacity across several movies helmed by Zack. Sadly, I wasn’t able to join the production in that alternate universe.

Actually, it’s more accurate to say that Zack Snyder had already envisioned specific objectives for adapting Flashpoint’s timeline-altering storyline, which makes the casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice seem less like a passing whim and more like a strategic move towards realizing his vision.

How Flashpoint Batman Would Compare To Negan On The Walking Dead, According To Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Initially, it appeared that Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s time-altering storyline was about to unfold, with Justice League laying the groundwork, and Ben Affleck possibly returning as Thomas Wayne in an unspecified role. However, amidst the chaos surrounding Justice League’s production and the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller, we instead received only Andy Muschietti’s Flash movie.

It’s possible that Zack Snyder could transform his “Flashpoint” concepts into a written story, perhaps even a graphic novel or something similar. An audiobook might also be an option, as long as Morgan reprises his role as Big Papa Batman to voice the character.

In regards to collaborating with Lauren Cohan on The Walking Dead, Jeffrey Dean Morgan suggested that his role in Batman v Superman might have been the trigger that prompted the showrunner to approach him for the part of Negan. To quote him directly:

It seems like Zack serendipitously brought us together. I’m not sure why or how, but it might be due to his foresight about potential outcomes. That’s my guess since he may have found the humor in casting us as a duo.

Considering all factors, Morgan is not yet too old to convincingly portray Thomas Wayne in terms of age. Fingers crossed that James Gunn continues his plans for Elseworlds stories, providing a chance to revisit the “Flashpoint” concept once more.
