One of Disney’s dearest animated movies is “Lilo & Stitch,” and in 2025, fans were treated to a live-action adaptation. Since Disney has received varying reactions to its live-action adaptations, this particular remake was among the successful ones.
On May 23rd, both “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible 8” made their debut in cinemas. Both movies are currently drawing large crowds, as anticipated. Interestingly, it was officially announced that “Lilo & Stitch shattered the Memorial Day weekend box office record with a staggering opening of $183 million“. Meanwhile, the original version is also performing exceptionally well on Disney+ streaming platform.
Over the weekend, two blockbuster films drew huge crowds to cinemas. These were either the freshly released live-action remake or the concluding chapter of the Mission: Impossible series. Additionally, they managed to accomplish several noteworthy milestones.
Over its first three days, Lilo & Stitch raked in an impressive $145.5 million and is projected to bring in a whopping $183 million by Monday, surpassing initial expectations that predicted earnings between $150 million and $160 million within the U.S. market.

The latest addition to the “Mission: Impossible” series, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” is continuing to perform exceptionally well on the charts. Upon its debut, it broke previous franchise records by earning $63 million in just three days, with an estimated $77 million through Monday. This impressive start surpassed the previous record-holder, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” from 2018, which had a top opening of $61 million.
However, it’s important to note that “The Final Reckoning” is one of the most expensive films ever produced. With such a high production cost, “Mission: Impossible 8” will need all the support it can get in order to achieve box office success.
Lilo & Stitch’s Success Continues on Streaming
I must admit, even with the recent release of the live-action remake, the 2002 original animated “Lilo & Stitch” has managed to capture the hearts of both long-time fans and new viewers intrigued by the big screen adaptation. Interestingly enough, a brief sneak peek into the remake is currently leading the global charts, with the 2002 original taking the No. 1 spot in six countries, including the United States, according to recent reports. The direct-to-video sequel “Lilo & Stitch: Stitch Has a Glitch” follows closely behind but didn’t quite garner the same level of enthusiasm as its predecessors.
The initially well-received live-action adaptation has seen its rating slip to 69%, as more reviews have been published. This falls short of the original’s impressive 86% “Certified Fresh” score. Interestingly, it garnered a higher score on the Popcornmeter, earning the Verified Hot badge with a 94%, in contrast to the 2002 film’s 78%.
