Amidst varying predictions about the future of the franchise, some members of the cast for “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” (note the title change) have expressed their views on whether Tom Cruise will continue his role. Since its debut as a movie spin-off of the classic TV spy show, the franchise led by Cruise has been one of the most financially successful in history, amassing over $4.09 billion globally to date. The “Mission: Impossible” series has been riding high lately, with almost every film directed by Christopher McQuarrie receiving critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the latest installment, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” Cruise and McQuarrie return to the action. This is a follow-up to the 2023 film, “Dead Reckoning.” In this story, Ethan Hunt and his team, now including Pom Klementieff as Paris and Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas, are in a race to find The Entity before it falls into the hands of Gabriel. With the franchise already a success, there have been whispers that this new sequel could be the last in the series. Paramount is promoting it as such, adding to the excitement surrounding “The Final Reckoning.” Critics have largely been impressed so far, especially considering the ending of “Dead Reckoning.
Looking forward to the premiere of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, ScreenRant sat down with Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett and Hayley Atwell for a discussion. In this conversation, they all expressed their opinions about Tom Cruise possibly continuing in the series, suggesting that the four-time Academy Award nominee may not be ready to retire Ethan Hunt just yet.
The Final Reckoning Cast “Can’t Imagine” Cruise Retiring From Mission: Impossible Yet
“He Runs Like A 14-Year-Old Boy.”
Rumors that “The Final Reckoning” would serve as the last “Mission: Impossible” film started circulating in November 2024, sparked by speculation that a report about Tom Cruise returning for “Days of Thunder 2” might position the movie as such. However, both Cruise and McQuarrie have consistently hinted otherwise, revealing since then that they had been brainstorming ideas for additional films during the press tour for “Dead Reckoning.” They now suggest that this new movie holds the key to a continuing narrative.
When asked about their opinions on whether Tom Cruise would reappear in future Mission: Impossible films, the cast of The Final Reckoning seemed quite optimistic that he would resume his role as Ethan Hunt at some stage in the future. Bassett first shared her belief that it’s hard to envision the series proceeding without Cruise leading the way, hinting that “he probably has more running ahead” and will “don the shoes and get back to work” once more at some point.
Pegg discussed the reasons he assumes the “Mission: Impossible” series won’t introduce a new character to replace Ethan, as he feels that the IMF team members possess distinct abilities and aren’t easily interchanged. He elaborated that while Ethan can’t perform tasks like Benji, such as hacking, Benji can’t execute feats like hanging off a plane or diving deep underwater. According to Pegg, they rely on each other in their unique ways.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve followed the Mission: Impossible franchise closely since Mission: Impossible III, and I can tell you that Simon Pegg, who’s worked alongside Tom Cruise throughout, emphasized a deep bond between all the characters. He stated that if one team member is absent, the whole operation could crumble like a house of cards. While there might be a possibility for a new generation to step up, as seen with Hayley Atwell’s Grace or Greg Tarzan Davis’ Degas, Pegg doesn’t foresee this happening anytime soon. In his opinion, Cruise isn’t going to hang up his action hero boots, whether it’s for Mission: Impossible or not. He still moves like a sprightly 14-year-old boy!
Instead of merely focusing on his work in the Mission: Impossible films, Atwell highlighted other projects from Cruise’s extensive filmography as potential indicators of what might come after The Final Reckoning. Some examples he mentioned were Born on the Fourth of July, Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Tropic Thunder, and Jerry Maguire, which happens to be one of his personal favorites. Atwell emphasized Cruise’s versatility in acting, as he has demonstrated a wide range and deep humanity throughout his performances. Collateral was another film where Cruise played a character that was not traditionally considered a hero.
It seems clear that this aspect plays a significant role in his professional life, and there’s no doubt we’ll witness an array of new creations from him across various platforms in the future.
