In ‘Wish World’, the latest ‘Doctor Who’ episode on Disney+, it seems to have surpassed all its previous wildness. Characters from the show’s past resurfaced in the narrative, orchestrated by ‘The Rani’. Notable returns included Jonah Hauer-King as ‘Conrad’ and Millie Gibson as ‘Ruby Sunday’, but the most surprising guest appearance left me feeling a bit down.
In the latest appearance of Jonathan Groff’s character Rogue, he valiantly rescued The Doctor from being ensnared in a tormenting parallel realm. This was shortly following a passionate kiss between the two. The previous season on Disney+ subtly suggested that these characters might develop a romantic relationship if they meet again, but the penultimate episode of Season 2 hinted that their chances of reunion may be minimal.

In a strange new realm, The Doctor and Belinda found themselves as a married couple, though there was a flicker of uncertainty that this wasn’t how their lives were intended. Nevertheless, they remained largely unaware of any abnormality. As the Doctor gradually sensed something amiss in his surroundings, it took Rogue successfully picking up Conrad’s broadcast from another dimension through the television to truly make him understand the discrepancy.

Due to his advice that tables prevent items from slipping and shattering, The Doctor deduced that there was something amiss in the world. Regrettably, his suspicion turned out to be part of The Rani’s scheme, which ultimately led to the resurrection of Omega, one of the earliest Time Lords known for his menacing nature. If people believed Sutekh to be a formidable adversary, they haven’t seen anything yet compared to this character. Unfortunately, I didn’t foresee that predicament as the episode concluded.

As a dedicated fan, what had me on edge was the whispers circulating about Ncuti Gatwa potentially parting ways with “Doctor Who” after this season. It’s troubling that when BBC brushed off cancellation speculations, they didn’t address this particular rumor directly. While it’s still uncertain whether the actor will continue for another season, the occurrence of unscheduled reshoots and the lack of a definitive season renewal at present have me leaning towards the possibility of his departure.

I really hope that happens, as it would provide some closure to their storyline if Nardole is indeed leaving his role as The Doctor. It seems unfair for Rogue to embark on another romance after the unique connection they shared.
In essence, despite the current rumors, there is still some room for doubt about whether Russell T. Davies is deliberately spreading misinformation to tabloids about Ncuti Gatwa leaving “Doctor Who” before a new season. Considering that if “Doctor Who” were to take a year off due to Disney ending its partnership with the BBC, it would take time for a new season to be produced. This period would provide Gatwa ample opportunity to perform in the play he’s been announced for, as well as potentially undertake another project before reprising his role as The Doctor.
In the final episode of “Doctor Who,” airing on Disney+ this coming Saturday, May 31st, we’ll find out what becomes of The Doctor. If The Doctor manages to make it through this season finale without undergoing a transformation (regeneration), I believe there’s a good likelihood that Gatwa will continue for another season.
