Without a doubt, Hunter x Hunter is a classic in the realm of shonen anime and manga. Characters like Gon, Killua, and Kurapika embark on a journey not just for personal growth, but also on extraordinary adventures that surpass the boundaries of the Hunters Exam. Notable arcs such as Greed Island or the Chimera Ant storyline are undeniably fantastic, yet one often goes unnoticed by fans. The Yorknew City arc lays the foundation for many significant aspects of the Hunter x Hunter world, which prove vital in subsequent arcs.
In their journey to a bustling urban center, Gon and Killua encounter an unusual test – instead of mastering Nen, they strive to secure a rare memory card at an upcoming city auction. Unlike the previous arcs that emphasized the group’s physical challenges, this storyline offers a fresh perspective by concentrating on this specific quest. The initial part of the arc lays the groundwork for the intriguing developments that follow.
Gon and Killua Raise Money to Acquire the Illusive ‘Greed Island’ Game
Rather Than Raising Their Strength, Gon and Killua Focus on Earning Enough Money to Buy a Copy of Greed Island
Following the conclusion of the Heavens Arena storyline, Gon discovers a hint about his father that sends him on a quest to explore the enigmatic Greed Island video game. As these games are scarce and hard to find, he decides to travel to Yorknew City and concoct strategies to amass sufficient funds for purchasing this elusive item. Simultaneously, Kurapika secures employment as a bodyguard for the Nostrade family, who will also be present at the upcoming auction. The forthcoming events of the Southernpiece Auction are already proving distinct from the last two, offering each character an exclusive role on that significant day.
The escalating tension culminating in the auction is a significant factor making the storyline engaging. Gon and Killua enjoy their friendly rivalry as they race to sell valuable goods swiftly on bustling Yorknew streets, with the former also participating in arm-wrestling matches for additional income due to Leorio’s assistance. While these amusing moments add charm, they are soon eclipsed by the impending danger posed by the Phantom Troupe.
The Phantom Troupe’s Introduction Is One of the Best in Shonen Anime
The Organization’s Infiltration of the Auction Shows How Organized and Lethal They Are As a Unit
Similar to Gon and Killua, the Phantom Troupe’s team members hold their own motives regarding the Southernpiece Auction. The formidable gang intends to swipe all items from the auction and eliminate anyone who dares to oppose them. However, the Phantom Troupe’s schemes collide with the Shadow Beasts – powerful Nen users employed by ten influential mafia bosses. This clash sets off a major showdown between the two factions, as they fight for control over the valuable items set to be sold at the auction.
This new development makes the already unusual tale even more intricate. Compared to typical shonen narratives, the Yorknew arc begins in an unusual manner. Instead of a grand tournament that could alter the world’s fate, the early sections of the story revolve around an important auction. The conflict between the Phantom Troupe and the Shadow Beasts intensifies, leading to chaos at the Southernpiece Auction.
On the inaugural day of the auction, I witnessed the Phantom Troupe causing chaos. Upon discovering the Shadow Beasts, Uvogin from the Phantom Troupe systematically eliminated four of their Nen-wielding members. Uvogin’s brutal display served as a stark reminder of the Phantom Troupe’s ruthless nature. For me personally, this was the precise outcome I had been anticipating.
Kurapika’s First Act of Revenge Causes an Explosive Chain of Events
The Sole Survivor of the Kurta Clan Becomes a Target for the Phantom Troupe After Killing Uvogin
In this storyline, Kurapika finds himself squarely at odds with the notorious Phantom Troupe due to their past actions against his clan, resulting in heavy losses. The tragic death of his people fuels a burning animosity within him. A pivotal moment occurs when he confronts Uvogin following the slaughter of the Shadow Beasts, subduing him with his innovative Dowsing Chain. Uvogin’s violent demise at Kurapika’s hands makes him a marked man among the Troupe members. The tension is intensely personal on both sides, and this confrontation effectively brings to fruition what viewers had been anticipating about Kurapika’s background from earlier arcs.
Once more, the Troupe launches an assault on the Southernpiece Auction site in a bid to draw out Uvogin’s assassin. A frenzy breaks loose as Gon and Killua get apprehended, and scores of guards assigned to secure the venue from the Troupe perish. Amidst the turmoil, Kurapika manages to nab Chrollo Lucifero, the head of the Troupe. However, Chrollo is exceptionally skilled at antagonizing Kurapika, compelling him to maintain Chrollo alive in anticipation of helping Gon and Killua.
In their second attack on the Auction, the tension between the Phantom Troupe and Kurapika escalates significantly compared to the first encounter. Following Uvogin’s death, both parties are thirsty for revenge. Unfortunately, Gon and Killua find themselves in the middle of this violent confrontation and struggle to keep up with the immense power demonstrated by members such as Machi and Pakunoda from the Troupe. To complicate matters further, Killua’s grandfather, Zeno Zoldyck, enters the fray as one of the assassins hired to quell the troupe, clashing swords with Chrollo in an intense battle. However, no one could have anticipated the mind-blowing conclusion that would bring this arc to a close.
Hisoka’s Betrayal Marks the End of a High-Stakes Story
The Deceptive Antagonist’s True Allegiances and Pakunoda’s Death End a Chaotic Story Arc
Prior to the conclusion of negotiations between Kurapika and Chrollo, it’s Hisoka who unexpectedly enters the scene. It was known from the beginning of the arc that this trickster was part of the Troupe, working under Chrollo to pilfer items from the Underground Auction within the mafia community. However, it wasn’t long before it was disclosed that Hisoka never truly served the troupe loyally and instead subtly orchestrated events to keep Chrollo in Yorknew, hoping for a chance to confront him. Yet, after making such extensive efforts to arrange a duel with Chrollo, Hisoka finds himself frustrated when he learns that his Nen abilities are limited by Kurapika.
During the intense talks, Hisoka withdraws, leaving the Troupe members to ponder their next step. Hostages involved in the Southernpiece Auction are set free by the Phantom Troupe, putting them at a disadvantage. With Kurapika’s Judgement Chain ability keeping Chrollo’s life in jeopardy, Pakunoda chooses to give up her own life to imprint knowledge about Kurapika’s powers into her Troupe comrades’ memories. This action triggers one of the chains Kurapika had set earlier, causing her instant death. Her demise concludes an exciting arc that showcases espionage, brutality, and revenge in Hunter x Hunter, although some fans might remember the Hunter Exam and Chimera Ant arcs more vividly, the Yorknew City arc offers equally intense action and drama.
