As a passionate Star Wars fan, I must admit that the franchise has experienced its fair share of highs and lows during the last decade. However, it’s undeniable that 2017’s The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stands out as one of the more challenging entries in the modern era for many of us fans. Interestingly, Johnson, who has since garnered significant praise for his work on the Knives Out franchise and Poker Face series, is also known for being the director behind the most contentious Star Wars film to date. Despite the overwhelming negative feedback from fans, Johnson expressed that he remains open to the possibility of revisiting his initial plan for a trilogy.
Rian Johnson recently spoke with The Independent about the current second season of Poker Face and the forthcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. During the interview, the director touched upon Star Wars and mentioned that working on The Last Jedi hasn’t left a bitter, galactic-blue-milk feeling in his mind. If given another chance to continue his trilogy, he would be eager to take it up. Johnson stated:
A Knives Out Mystery. He also reflected on Star Wars, stating that his work on The Last Jedi didn’t leave an unpleasant, blue-milk-esque aftertaste. If offered another opportunity to complete his trilogy, he would be ready and willing. Johnson said:
To be honest, I’ve found myself quite engrossed in a murder mystery lately, but I’m still working on other projects. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. If I ever return to the Star Wars universe, I can assure you I would be overjoyed.
Upon the launch of “The Last Jedi”, it was met with widespread acclaim by critics, boasting a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, fans soon voiced their disapproval of the film. A significant portion of the fanbase (more than many Star Wars enthusiasts may acknowledge) found issues with various aspects of the movie. Even casual viewers noted inconsistencies in the plot and character portrayals, such as Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. Fortunately, even harsh criticism hasn’t deterred Rian Johnson from continuing his involvement with the franchise. He persisted by saying:
Let me emphasize this point: My situation isn’t comparable to going through living hell, but rather, it’s like winning the lottery for a filmmaker. This extraordinary experience has only intensified my love for Star Wars, and that’s saying something given how deeply ingrained it was in my childhood memories.
What Happened to Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy?
Fans of Star Wars may find Johnson’s fresh trilogy somewhat distant considering the abundance of content produced by Disney since The Last Jedi. However, before its launch, Disney had revealed that Rian Johnson was also in charge of creating another new trilogy within the Star Wars universe.
Despite some fans believing that the mixed response to “The Last Jedi” ended Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy, his enthusiasm propelled him towards different projects. Fans of Johnson are relieved and excited that he shifted focus from Star Wars after “The Last Jedi,” not due to the debate surrounding his Star Wars film, but because it paved the way for him to create the remarkable Knives Out movies instead.
