Reacher‘s romantic interests have been refreshed each season thus far, but the series could break this persistent pattern by adapting two Lee Child novels. Just like the original Lee Child Jack Reacher books, the Amazon Prime Video detective series has maintained a consistent storytelling structure with each season. In every fresh episode, the main character encounters a new town, and somehow, trouble seeks him out before he becomes entangled in a bigger conspiracy. As Reacher pursues justice, he frequently teams up with both novel and familiar allies.
The three seasons of “Reacher” have added personal elements for the character by connecting the central plot to an incident from his history, with revenge being a recurring motif throughout. Alan Ritchson’s character is spurred on by this desire for justice and retribution against wrongdoers. Similarly, each season introduces a new love interest for Reacher, mirroring the pattern in the books. However, this repetitive pattern might be broken if the show decides to adapt two Lee Child novels in the upcoming period.
One Of Reacher’s Romantic Interests Appears In Two Lee Child Books
Jodie Garber Is The Only Reacher Love Interest Who Shows Up In Two Books
Although certain viewers have voiced concerns over the rotating love interests of Reacher in each season, others have acknowledged the show’s dedication to staying true to its source material amidst some criticism. Fortunately, the Prime Video series has found a way to cater to both groups by adapting two novels. In Lee Child’s “Tripwire”, a character named Jodie Garber is introduced as the daughter of Reacher’s former military superior, Leon Garber. After crossing paths in “Tripwire”, Jodie and Reacher develop a romantic relationship that lasts for quite some time following their initial encounter.
In the books, Jack Reacher’s relationships typically don’t last long, as seen with Roscoe, Duffy, and Dixon who were only part of his life for one season. However, things are different with Jodie Garber. After the happenings in Tripwire, Jack Reacher continues his relationship with Jodie Garber, a connection that persists even in Lee Child’s novel The Visitor (known as Running Blind in the US). Interestingly, they share a home in upstate New York, a property that Leon Garber bequeaths to Reacher upon his death.
If the TV series decides to follow the storyline of “Tripwire” before moving on to “The Visitor”, it could break its bothersome pattern of introducing a new female lead character in each season. Unlike characters like Roscoe, Duffy, and Dixon, Jodie Garber might have a recurring role throughout two seasons of “Reacher”, rather than being replaced after just one episode. This would not only provide the show with a sense of continuity but also keep it faithful to the original books without straying too far from them.
Before Picking Tripwire & Running Blind, Reacher Will Have To Adapt Another Novel
Another Lee Child Book Narratively Precedes The Two Novels
Up until now, the Prime Video series based on Lee Child’s novels has chosen not to stick to the original timeline of the books. Since many of the books tell standalone stories, the show has been able to present tales out of sequence, choosing those that work best for television. However, in order to adapt “Tripwire” and “The Visitor”, the series will need to first cover the events from Lee Child’s “Die Trying”. This is because Jodie Garber is Leon Garber’s daughter, so the show needs to introduce Leon to viewers before delving into Jodie’s storyline.
It’s intriguing to note that in season 3 of the show ‘Reacher’, Leon Garber has been introduced as a significant character from the main character’s military history. This could hint that the creators intend to delve into Leon and Jack’s father-son dynamic, forged in the military, by adapting the novel ‘Die Trying’ in future episodes. Actor Alan Ritchson has expressed his desire to see ‘Die Trying’ adapted as it is his favorite Lee Child book. If this comes to fruition, and they adapt ‘Die Trying’, ‘Tripwire’, and ‘The Visitor’, these stories could logically unfold and include Jodie Garber as the only recurring love interest for Jack Reacher.
