Warning: Major plot points revealed for the Season 12 finale of Chicago P.D., titled “Vows,” which can be streamed now with a Peacock subscription.

In anticipation of a climactic episode featuring Voight reflecting on his life and Reid taking a significant action against the Intelligence Unit, the last episode of Chicago P.D.’s spring 2025 television lineup was undeniably intense throughout. Despite the turmoil the unit faced, as showrunner Gwen Sigan put it, they were “in deep trouble,” the finale ultimately concluded on a mostly positive note. During my conversation with Sigan, I couldn’t help but inquire about the guest list for Burgess and Ruzek’s long-awaited wedding and why an episode titled “Vows” didn’t contain any actual wedding vows.

The wedding adhered to traditional norms as per One Chicago, featuring Burgess in a stunning dress, Ruzek looking sharp in his suit, a procession down the aisle, and numerous attendees filling the church pews. The event concluded the episode, sparing it from any potential disruption by Reid. However, Voight’s decisive action against the Deputy Chief cast a shadow over the ceremony when Chapman couldn’t help but reference it.

At last, Burzek has exchanged vows, making them the first married couple on the set of Chicago P.D. since Upstead’s departure. During a conversation with Gwen Sigan regarding the recent wedding in the expansive One Chicago universe, I inquired about the decision-making process behind the guest list for the ceremony. She responded:

Boy oh boy! We had a list of people we wanted, and it was more like, ‘Who would fit best?’ [chuckles] It’s often about scheduling and production challenges in the end. If we could have every actor from One Chicago appear, we certainly would, but that’s not always practical. They’re busy saving the day on set!

We were thrilled to include Mouch because it seemed essential given his connection with Platt. After all, he should be by her side as her date. We were also hoping to bring in as many cast members as possible, but reality sometimes has other plans.

In the events of both Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, only Mouch was present at the P.D.’s gathering, with Christian Stolte showing up shortly following his dramatic episode on Med. Notably, no past P.D. stars were in attendance, as I hadn’t expected any after the Burzek development. However, all main P.D. characters, along with Makayla and Bob Ruzek, were there, plus several unnamed individuals. This provided a sufficient crowd for Kim and Adam to celebrate their wedding.

In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, fans of “Chicago P.D.” might have been anticipating the long-awaited “I do” from the show’s most enduring couple, Burzek, in the Season 12 finale. However, it seems that the moment was not included in the episode’s script, as actor Jason Beghe (Sigan) confessed during an interview.

Indeed, you didn’t catch any vow-related scenes. Initially, during the preliminary stages of our beat sheet outline, we considered incorporating voiceovers and vows. However, as we progressed, it seemed too soft and overly sweet for the tone we aimed to maintain throughout the final product. Given the high stakes established in the narrative, a sudden shift to this softer tone felt jarring. Consequently, there were never any scenes featuring vows that made it onto the script pages.

If they wanted to include one more conversation between Voight and Chapman at the wedding, the event couldn’t just be a carefree spectacle for viewers. After all, Voight’s actions that ultimately led to Reid’s death and his subsequent decline were due to him slipping back into old harmful behaviors. Despite being dressed up for a wedding, Chapman didn’t hesitate to challenge Voight on his missteps.

Instead of explicitly stating how Burgess and Ruzek declared their love and began their marriage, we can infer it from them standing at the altar surrounded by loved ones. Meanwhile, it appears that Voight and Chapman were engaged in a different kind of conversation a few pews away. With no indication that Marina Squerciati or Patrick John Flueger will be departing the show like Jesse Lee Soffer did, it seems that the Burzek relationship is thriving as they move forward into Season 13.
